Malwarebytes causes issues in Windows 7.

I recently installed malwarebytes anti-malware free edition and ran a scan.
It detected only one problem. Off the top of my head it was something relating to a dll file.

I removed the "infection"... However it turnsout I have just deleted some sort of sytem file without knowing.

Now I can't seee anything on my desktop. For example if I copy and paste something to my desktop, or create a new file, it will not show up. However when I browse to my desktop directory (C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop) the files are there.

Is there any way I can restore my desktop so I can see what I put there?

All help would be much appreciated.

Note: If I go to display properties and change the desktop icons showing uch as computer, recycle bin etc, they also do not show.

Yes, do a "Restore System" form the "Systems Tools" folder under Accessories in the Start Menu, or just hit the Windows key and type in System Restore.

You might try using Microsoft MSE, seems to be just a little better that Malwarbytes IMO.

Try a system restore to before that happened. it would help a lot if you knew what it had detected and you let it remove, but..

Most of the time on x64, it will detect Dispaly hijhackproperties, a registry key for NoActiveDesktop Changes, which is common and not dangerous, and every time I've let it "remove the infection" it only changes the registry key from a 1 to a zero,. You can do it manually in regedit. Never has had any effects as you describe leaving it as it is, or letting MBAM "remove it"

MSE and Malwarebyte's product are not comparable. It's like apples and oranges. MSE is a "preventer" as well as a remover, but MBAM is a remover only (unless you are using the paid version. MBAM is not an anti-virus product, but is a malware remover.

FYI, I have installed MBAM on over 100 customer machines, including probably 20 running Windows 7 and it has never caused an issue.

I take offense when someone starts a thread with an ominous title like this one. It causes new users to shy away from a product that can genuinely help them. I feel in cases like this it would be responsible of the admins to change the title to something less threatening, such as "Possible issue with xxxxxxxxxxxx."

I'm using Malwarebytes on at least 5 windows 7 PCs with no issues.

I seem to recall that there was a False Positive issue related to some Win7 file but that it could be recovered w/o too much difficulty. A search of the Malwarebytes forums led me to the solution when it happened to me.

Take a look at the log file stored at:

"C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs"

Appdata is hidden , so you need to show hidden files and folders.

I never had a problem with mbam.

No issues here with MBAM on 5 different machines, both 32 and 64 bit.

Can you copy and paste the MBam .txt log into you next post? Hopefully you saved it! We can identify what was removed from that log.

I would not rely on MWB as your primary line of defense. Have something like MSE for primary resident defense and spybot and then MWB for non resident malware protection. I say this because to date MWB has not found a single item where the other two have.

You dont need 2 anti virus programs running together. Needless use of resources and could cause conflictions.

Unless I am mistaken, swarfega does not have two antivirus programs actively running.

Malwarebytes is an anti-malware software.
MSE is an antivirus software
ThreatFire is a system monitor (Even though PC Tools AntiVirus is included for On-demand Scanning, the a/v is not active.)
