It could be you, can't really tell as we don't know what the specs of your machine are so have no idea what you are running.

Could you go into your User CP and fill out your system specs, that way the experts will know what kind of machine they are dealing with and be able to give you better help with your problem.
Thank you. ;)

Certain apps install context handlers which cause problems for CompMgmtLauncher.exe, which is what you're invoking with that "Manage" shortcut.

It's possible to troubleshoot and work out exactly which app is responsible, but you can get to the end-destination (the relevant MMC snap-in) by just running COMPMGMT.MSC instead.

would doing this knacker up my installation?

no, still the same

I think it's just you. I can perform the exact steps you describe, resulting at me looking at the Computer Management window.
Maybe UAC is interfering?
Maybe your Start Menu is broken?
Maybe your whole installation of Windows 7 is corrupt?
Maybe your head-gasket is gone?
Or maybe your swingarm is dented?

i may have petrol thats too old, it may block up the injectors, swinging arm fine, the frame does have the slightest of a scratch, but that doesn't make it any slower

i can still get to it with just searching for manage, so i'll probably just leave it as is.

Strictly speaking, it's a workaround, not a "fix", and copying over binaries from Vista to use instead of the Win7 equivalents has a degree of risk associated with it - there are valid reasons why they're different.

The conclusion in that thread is also incorrect. The Win7 version of CompMgmtLauncher.exe is not "corrupted" but is instead sufficiently different to the Vista one to be confused by the configuration changes made by a particular app on your system. In other words, the Vista CompMgmtLauncher.exe is slightly dumber and simpler - it overlooks the app problem which stops the Win7 version from doing its job.

Hopefully, everyone is making the same mistake that I made. It has to be my computer and not the shortcut.

if anyone else has still this problem...

i had a problem with compmgmtlauncher.exe i guess it got corrupted but i suppose its sort of the same problem....

my workaround was this, create a .bat file (named whatever) and just type in it:

Start C:\Windows\System32\compmgmt.msc
Exit

save

shift-right-click and select "copy as path"

open up Regedit
navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}/shell/Manage/command/

edit the data entry and paste the path to your new .bat file

also, if you dont have the corrupt file like i have, you can just check to make sure it points into "%SystemRoot%/Windows/System32/CompMgmtLauncher.exe"

I have had this same problem repeatedly...using 7 pro version with some default programs removed, services tweaked, and running avg. when it happens to me I cant run the compmgmtlauncher.exe at all...nothing happens entering....

%SystemRoot%\system32\CompMgmtLauncher.exe
in start->run

i have admin priv on machine...

uh...i just noticed you have %systemroot%/windows/system32....???
%systemroot% = windows

maybe a type-o

lqedu,
Thanks for the fix; it works great. Funny thing is, the shortcut is still there, but I had to change the shortcut to "run as administrator" to avoid getting the file security warning popup. Your fix, by going around the shortcut stopped the annoying prompt.
