Media Centre PC BSOD 0x0000008e

Hi, if anyone can help me - i would really be appreciative. i have a pc that i built from scratch, and use it mainly for recording TV through windows media centre, or converting files using Xilisoft Video Converter Platinum v6. My computer hates to wake up from sleep and gives BSOD's after media centre awakes it for recording and returns it to sleep, so left it always powered on and for November and had no issues. I have been recieving BSOD's every few hours for the last week - it is really getting old. can anyone interpret anything from these dumps? I recieve lots of "IRQL not less or Equal" and Win32k.dys messages associated with error 0x0000008e codes. any help would be appreciated cheers,

Hello,

The most common cause blamed is Norton/Symantec. Remove that according to these directions: Norton Product Support | Installation and Uninstall

Replace Norton with MSE: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials

Also, uninstall Nero Tools.

Your USB camera drivers are old:

Really appreciate the advice mate. I am hesitant to uninstall Norton, but have uninstalled Nero. Not sure how to uninstall the webcam driver as the webcam died and isn't apearing in device manager anymore.

I've had issues with apps crashing and Gigabyte (for my TV Tuner and Motherboard h55-usb3) suggested that insufficent power supplied to the psu could be the problem.

Does that seem plausible? i have the computer attached to a power surge device, but for insufficent power, i'm just not sure.

What is the model of your PSU?

The latest two dumps point to a graphics error, however the drivers are up-to-date. Do you have another video card you can test out?

You're right, a bad PSU might cause these problems.

If it's a graphics error, can you suggest a good card that may be better suited for this pc? i have it recording through windows media centre and converting video using xilisoft pretty much all day long.

I must admit I am hesitant to recommend a graphics card at this point, because it is not clear that is the cause. In the first report, Symantec was blamed several times, and nothing has been done about that yet. We also haven't tested RAM, ran Driver Verifier, etc.

I'd just hate for you to buy an expensive graphics card, only to find out it has nothing to do with your problem.

If you really want a graphics card recommendation, we'll be happy to assist though.
