Hi rich, I have the same problem (ie: microsoft icons do not show after updating graphics card driver + monitor + ethernet switch). I tried a system restore first and it did not fix the problem.

So then I reinstalled the driver updates and it only made the problem worse.... instead of only the microsoft office icons appearing as "no icon" now skype and adobe reader icons show the same behaviour. So I ran the rebuild_icon_cache.bat file and all that did was to change the icon from the "no icon" to some other icon that looks like a default "shortcut" icon of some sort. Also, I tried to uninstall skype and that gave an error and didn't work. So I tried another system restore to undo the rebuild_icon_cache changes but that then produced an unstable reboot (ie: entire display was black, then upon restarting windows started in safemode)

edit: after shutting down from the safemode boot and rebooting again a couple of times I'm back here but still cannot uninstall skype. In the beginning only the file type icons for xlsx and docx files would not display (in explorer or from within excel open recent file pane) but the desktop ones and xlsm or xls filetype icons were ok. Along the way, each time I tried to fix something, it was like the problem only got gradually worse, so now the desktop icons and ALL filetype icons for microsoft office are displayed as "no icon".

Any suggestions????

As an update to my above post, I installed TuneUp utilities as suggested a page back or so and ran through a bunch of fixes. After rebooting the filetype icons were restored in explorer and within Excel 2010 (the recent file list) but the application icons were not restored on the desktop. So I just did a workaround and made new shortcuts.

However, in other news this process seems to have altered the system volume information folder which I had been monitoring previously whilst trying to free up some HD space.

I guess I'm content that everything is working ok now so, but if anyone wants to explain what they think might have been going on here, it would be most appreciated.

Sorry to wake the dead thread, But i am having this same problem. not sure what brought it on, but i did take ownership a few days ago, also have been using ccleaner; never had an issue with it. Windows/installers is missing alot of the required files. I really don't want to have to reinstall windows. does anyone have the installer folders for MS office professional 2010

It seems it happened to alot of my programs but i fixed acrobat/pdf, audition. Office works and so the associated ".doc" files, they just don't have the usual icon instead it has the unassociated blank icon.

I would love to fix this. Im thinking i may have to download some icons and just associate them manually unless someone could help.

A different ZIP file for Vista?

I have the same problem except that my system is Windows Vista... I know there's a forum for Vista users but no threads address this issue as plain and simply as this. The Vista forum just keeps suggesting downloading many applications that will do a lot of big things, like registry cleanup or system file restore.

Things in this thread (as suggested by WINSTAR) makes more sense to me. I downloaded and run the FileTypeMan.exe and leanred that my office icons all point to the C:\Windows\Installer. I then downloaded and unzipped those {9xxxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxxOFFICE} folders (uploaded by WINSTAR in this thread) to the C:\Windows\Installer folder but they did not work even after restarts - a message said that those files like wordicon.exe "is not a valid Win32 file".

Is there a different version of those {9xxxxxxxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxOFFICE} folders for Vista?

By the way, I found a bunch of {9xxxxxxxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxOFFICE}-C folders in my C:\MSOCache. I tried to copy them to my C:\Windows\Installer but that did not fix the problem. I also did the opposite too. I went to the FileTypeMan.exe, selected a file type (e.g., .doc) and tried to change the icon location to point to these folders in C:\MSOCache. When I was doing this, I needed to select a particular icon file (not a folder). But all the files I tried did not contain a standard MSWord document icon.

The other time this happens when the icon file is missing because the folder that holds the icon has been deleted. For the most part the icons come from the application itself or a DLL for that application, however many applications don’t do that anymore and store the icon in the windows install folder. A good example of this is Adobe Reader v9.2 the icon for this application is stored at: C:\Windows\Installer\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A92000000001} If you delete this folder your PDF icon(s) will be gone and look like your screen shots. It is possible you may have deleted these folders by mistake or a cleaning software deleted them thinking they are just left over folders from an install. The easiest way to fix this is to access another computer with the same software copy these folders from that computer to the broken computer and reboot. If that does not work or you do not have access to another computer, reinstalling the applications typically fix the problem.

Just wanted to thank you for your post - going back a few years I realize, but for me it was the perfect solution - copying the Installer directories from my laptop (Win7 Home) to my workstation (Win7 Pro), which had suddenly "lost" its ability to present Office and Acrobat Reader icons.

This procedure couldn't help me restore the missing icon for Corel Painter 12 because I don't have it installed on my laptop. Even if I found the Painter12 icon I'm not sure where I should place it, in the Win>Installer directory or somewhere else. Doesn't matter since it's not available on the web I don't think.

I wish I knew why this happened; I didn't delete anything from my C:drive. I run the normal updates from Windows and Adobe...maybe one of them corrupted the directories. Who knows?

There are so many solutions for this problem on the web but every case is different. As you noted sometimes it's easy to fix (delete the icon cache) sometimes it's not. Now that you told us how to do it - copying the Installer Directories from machine to another - I'd say this fix ranks as "EASY." Thanks again!

At first I did not understand what you were asking because you kept saying that your applications were using the default icon. The screen shots help immensely. What you are seeing is NOT the default icon but NO icon. If you were seeing the default icon you would have what you want.

Actually, the OP is correct. He is seeing the default icon Windows displays for any filetype without an application association. It most certainly isn't "NO icon" as it clearly right there. So yes, "default" icon is right.

I didn't see the answer in the other posts, so I'll provid this one:

The icons are replaced with the default icons within the icon cache file. The simplest way to fix this is to pull up Task Manager and kill the "explorer.exe" process. Then go to "File" -> "New Task (Run )" and execute "explorer.exe" again. This will rebuild the icons cache immediately and your office icons will appear once again.

Update: 17-JAN-2013

Use the FileTypeMan software to find which folder is used for the Office Icons your version of Office 2007, 2010 or 2013.

FileTypesMan - Alternative to 'File Types' manager of Windows

Look for the Default Icon Value. Something like:

Windows\Installer\{91140000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}

There are many different GUIDs for this so your may NOT look exactly like the one above.

Once you found the {9xxx0000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} key you need look in the \Windows\Installer folder for this folder. If it does not exist you need to replace it. If it does exist you need to copy over it. You can get the contents of this folder from any machine that is running the EXACT same version of office.

Reboot problem fixed.
