My HP Win 7 Computer finally just quit on me and it would not even turn on with the start button anymore. I am using a computer that was given to me by the mother of a friend of mine who passed on August 2017. I tried it back then, but it barely worked, so I just set it aside thinking I would try to fix it one day. That day came when my computer died.
I first tried to put my hard drive from my HP computer into this Acer computer but that didn't work, so I put the hard drive back that came with the Acer when given to me.
I have tried to do a great many things hoping to clean up the HD & OS to hopefully make the computer run better and faster, as it is frustratingly sloooow, crashes and just refuses to respond sometimes. It also continues to tell me that this copy of Windows 7 is not genuine. I looked on the side of the computer and it has the Windows Key for Windows XP. I don't know if my friend tried to upgrade to Win 7 and couldn't activate it or if one of her friends put a bootleg version of Win 7 on another hard drive and installed that hard drive removing the original.
If I can't fix this computer to run any better, I don't want to spend money on a Windows 7 key and would just use this one until I can find a good used computer with a Windows 7 operating system that I can afford. Going out to look at some today.

If I "can" fix this computer, what steps would I have to take to make the Microsoft notice STOP?

Thank you, in advance, for your time and any suggestions you might offer.

That is an acer oem key. You could install a clean copy of windows, and skip entering the product key which gives you a grace period of 30 days.

You could check and see what the machine is licensed for. Downloading and running the program from the 3rd paragraph HERE (7oeminstaller ) and see what it tells you
BIOS Info will run a separate included tool and tell you what manufacturer data is present.

Thank you so much, but...

I am a little nervous as all of this is so new to me. I have already followed many of the steps you suggested, and now I see that I need to get a 4G Flash Drive. I was about to ask you how to do a clean install, but I think that information is also listed. I can see that I should wait until I have the ABR information safely on a flash drive, but I am confused as to why it would require 4Gigabytes because I did not see that much information on the activation-backup.exe file.

I shouldn't ask to take up any more of your time when the answer will probably appear when I have the opportunity to continue to follow through with the steps. I saw the link to where I can access the Win 7 OEM but where am I to install it? Do I use a new blank hard drive?

I think I am getting brain cramps, or having a senior moment or something. But, seriously this is all so very new to me and I am a little nervous that I might screw something up. Not your problem, I know. But, please don't give up on me as I am sure I can do this. I just want to make sure that I get another hard drive if I need one at the same time I get the Flash Drive, OR - do I erase the existing hard drive and do a clean install afterward? Maybe I should take a nap before my brain falls out.
Thank you again for expanding my consciousness today! :-)

I hope it is okay if I wait to mark my thread resolved or solved when I actually complete the whole process "successfully" or would you prefer that I do that now?

Hi Mangonanny,

Definately a bootleg copy, the BIOS is dated prior to W7's release no way it can have a factory installed product key.

notes
As for it running slow, Ultimate needs at least 4GB ram - whats yours.
(is it possible to use any of the RAM sticks from the HP)
Please update any drivers and BIOS from the comps homepage
You are running a 32bit (x86) system make sure that you download this type only.
If you go to a clean install, you dont have to run ultimate, use the same version as your HP
(ooops shouldn't have said that as theres a COA sticker with a key on it)

I definately recommend that you do what SIW2 has suggested above first.

To find out how much RAM is installed please do the following, click Start > right-click Computer, select Properties. Under System it will list the Memory [RAM].

If you do decide to do a clean install then please let us know and we will be able to post the procedure along with a quick way to get the OS fully updated. You will need to backup any data FIRST, prior to the clean install.

I hope this helps!

To SIW2 - Roy/Torchwood - Paul Black - Thank you all!!! I think between the 3 of you my little pea brain has absorbed some great information! I only have 512 MB Ram, or so it says when I boot up computer. I extracted the memory chips from my HP and went to look where to put them in the Acer only to discover that there are only two slots and they are full. No more available. Definitely a bootleg copy of Win 7.
I ran the ABR that SIW2 suggested the other day and I think that at some point I may do a clean install and just see if I can put the original Windows Operating System back in to this computer. Just to have it for back up occasionally. It took several minutes before I was able to type this reply to you all, as once I came to the site it buffered forever.
I really want to use my favorite Windows 7 (well, actually the one that I am most familiar) as I don't want to waste time trying to learn another OS, especially when I have heard such negative things about them.
There is a Tech store that has advertised on Craigslist selling refurbished HP Desktops with Windows 7 OS and I think I will look at them today. Even though I backed up my hard drive a month or two ago, I would really like to get the last few documents and pictures I put on it. Thinking that I might be able to swap out hard drives on one of those refurbished PC's even just temporarily, long enough to do a back up and then who knows?
I will be 70 this summer and I think I have stretched my brain cells enough for a while. Hopefully, I won't have to "think" too much today. Haha!
You have all been great and I suspect that I will be back someday soon.
Not exactly sure how to thank you all individually and I only see the "Mark Solved" under this last post by Paul Black. But, I DO THANK YOU, VERY MUCH!! YOU HAVE BEEN EXCELLENT!!

If that is all the memory you have, don't even bother trying to run Windows 7.

There is a Tech store that has advertised on Craigslist selling refurbished HP Desktops with Windows 7 OS and I think I will look at them today.

Check out Walmart.com - do a search on "refurbished desktop computers" (without the quotes). Narrow the search down to Operating System = "Windows 7" and Retailer = "Walmart.com". The nice thing about buying it from "Walmart.com" is that if there is a problem with it, you can return it to your local Walmart for a refund. (If you buy from another retailer at the Walmart.com website, Walmart won't give you a refund.)
