We have had an absolute deluge of problem updates from Redmond recently and some have been serious. What's up at Microsoft?

The last several months have seen a disturbing string of problems in updates released for Microsoft products. Last week we saw three. It's time to worry about what's behind it all.

There's another complication potentially at fault in these bugs: Microsoft silently patches many security problems. Who knows, perhaps the Kyrgyz/Mongolian and Ruble updates did a lot more than Microsoft claimed they did. If an undocumented function of an update were to cause problems it wouldn't be surprising for Microsoft to dissemble in their explanations. Of course I'm speculating here, but it's not like we have an official and logical explanation on which to rely.

Upgrade to what? Like the poster I'm already running Win7 and Win8.1. Also have Win10 TP on a computer. Maybe the Linux Mint 17.1 I have on a Desktop and a Notebook are upgrades?

I wouldn't be surprised, and also, take in mind Windows 8 has been having problems with updates this year...

Updates have been exhibiting problems since always, MS rushes things too much, that's why many IT's wait for a SP, so they can catch all the updates, revisited and fixed. I do that too BTW, I just lurk here to see if there are critical security patches announced, install, and that's all. After a rather rude BSOD I had years ago... I decided to disable WU and just install the critical stuff...

Let's hope they improve this... someday XD, Until then, it's better to control what to update and what not

Having been around Windows since v3.1, I'm not sure much has changed in regards to this subject. Windows is much bigger with each version and far more integrated too. MS has never been known for pre-release testing at very high levels, so I'm not surprised that W7 updates continue to have bugs. Windows is what it is and always will be.

One of the commenter's, said to do a clean install of Linux for each new release. I am going to have to disagree on that one. Once, you got your system like you want it regardless of what operating system you have---you don't want to change it ever 5 minutes. On ubuntu and other flavors the software updater downloads new version automatically. So no point in doing a clean install of those.

Microsoft doesn't rush things unless it is an out of bounds patch. They do a security release at the minimum on a certain Tuesday or Wednesday each month. That not really the cause of the problem, they may have laid off people that possibly checks the updates.

I think you may be right about that one sadly Thrash. Unfortunately; lately the the updates from Microsoft have much more harm than good for us end users. What gives? I mean is it really that hard to put out updates without doing something to harm a user's system? What next?

If you research allot of them they have more to do with upgrading to 8 than serving 7
Recommended and Optional updates should be avoided at all costs or at the very least looked at much closer to see what the heck they are for,
Most are a waste of space.

Actually, if you consider how many combinations of software and hardware that can exist, it's a bloody miracle M$ doesn't have far more problems with updates than they do.And when they do have a problem, even though a large number of people are affected, those affected are a small to tiny percentage of the total number of people receiving the updates. Also keep in mind that M$ operating systems are huge, complicated programs.

That's it for me. No more auto updates. Just spent most of my night fixing their mess again. Update leaves my laptop in such a mess it won't even reopen Windows! Nice going, Microsoft!

Yep well you have to wonder how long it will take before something like that happens to you/ me...
I personally hate surprises on either Tuesday mornings or Wednesday mornings neither are a good time

I don't get surprises. I have my updates set to notify me when they are available, then wait until Saturday morning to download and install them. That way, M$ has had plenty of time to identify a problem and pull the offending update.

Updates always working fine here on my machines, both 7 & 8. But am making a os partition image before applying anything, safety comes first after reading about the real problems some experience, but can't remember ever having to revert to a previous image due to any MS update.

Check the setting regularly

I don't get surprises. I have my updates set to notify me when they are available, then wait until Saturday morning to download and install them. That way, M$ has had plenty of time to identify a problem and pull the offending update.

You need to check that setting after every month's updates.

Every so often, an update changes my update settings to "Automatic".
