Ive been reading a lot on these forums about debugging with minidumps. Not that I want to get into debugging personally, but want to know in advance of any problem how to access the minidump (for debugging by others). Prior Planning and preperation and all that......

The problem is that I have had a look into the windows directory for "minidump" but there is nothing there (file or folder). I was wondering if anyone could advise.

PS I have temporarily unhidden system and hidden files/folders but still no sign of minidump!!

Your desire to be prepared is commendable, and I'm happy to say that if there's "nothing there", it's because your machine is not in the habit of crashing due to bugcheck errors :)

The default settings lead to the creation of a minidump - should a crash occur.
