Solved .MKV File Associations Lost

I was about to play a movie, but found that even though videos of other formats appeared to be okay, none of the videos with the .mkv format displayed their normal icons in the file manager, and there seemed to be no way to select them from the context menu.

I checked in Windows File Associations, and there is no .mkv even listed. How do I correct this?

right click on a .mkv file
select "Properties"
you'll see "Open with", click the Change button

At a guess, your trying to watch Senna? VLC player will play it fine and you'll get the normal icon up with the VLC cone in the corner, or download DivX and again it will show the normal icon for the film.

No, that does correct the association with the player, and causes the file manager to display the proper icon for the files, but Windows doesn't even know that .mkv files even exist, and that format is not listed in Windows File Association. When I attempt to play a movie, the system freezes and requires a reboot, just as it did before.

I do not believe that this problem can be fixed, until WFA lists .mkv files among known formats.

The problem is not with just one movie, it is with all movies that are of the .mkv format.

Thanks, that returned .mkv to the WFA list, but VLC still froze and WMP only displayed a black screen. I fixed VLC by reinstalling/upgrading it, and it now works perfectly. As far as WMP goes, I'm not going to mess with it, because I have never liked it much anyway.
