I have a problem recently that when I play a media file (video or audio) from the HDD, it is lagging (playback stops here and there for a few seconds randomly). It has been a problem recently, it was not like that before. If I play music from Spotify or watch Youtube, the problem is not present. Recently the HDD had problems, it got stuck once reporting error and the system crashed, and it was also short on space for a very long time. Can it be possible that the playback codecs or softwares fell into problematic sectors and readout is slow? Interestingly I watched an .mkv recently, in that case the playback was smooth, its codec is: MPEG4. But when I watched an .mts with codec reported as "27", the playback was lagging. If i check resource meter, CPU is 9%, memory is 50% while problematic playback, no peaks. HDD is on max.

Any ideas what to do?

If your hard drive is going South, it'll WILL have erratic and unpredictable behavior. I'd update the hard drive if this is the case.
