Hey guys, first, I did a search but the thousands of threads that popped up were overwhelming, and most were from 2009 so I figured the info could be outdated. With that said, I am asking something I am sure has been asked before. How can I play MKV files with Media Center? Streaming to an xbox360 would be nice as well. Thanks.

I found that the DivX Codec pack did it, after days of trying lol

Thanks. Videos are now recognized and playable by WMC but no audio though. :(

Also try the K-Lite Codec pack, it has something called the Haali Media Splitter which should do it. I'm surprised it doesn't work with DivX though, it ties into the DirectShow built into the OS (Windows has the capability built in for MKV files, just doesn't have a codec for it, this is where DivX comes in. Some googling should turn up a Microsoft answers thread, which should inspire you some more.
By the way, can you play them okay in WMP? It may come down to registry editing to fix this, just give me a shout (on this thread) if you need more help.
Ta,
Tom

A default installation of the Shark007 Win7codecs will allow Media Center to play MKV's and it will also allow the xbox360 to play MKV's. On the Help TAB of the Settings Application, press the button to associate filetypes to the Windows players.
Do not install the DivX software along with Shark007. If you have it installed, remove it 1st.

klite will not enable the xbox360 to play mkv files like the Shark007 codecs do.

Also be sure to use current releases from MajorGeeks.com.
Some older releases installed the Ask toolbar without asking the user to do so.

Since he was looking for mkv playback on the xbox360, i suggested he use my codecs instead.

Hey Shark, thanks for the responses. But I am having some issues.

With you codec pack installed WMC is now recognizing MKV files, however it will not play them. It gives me a message that says "Windows Media Center cannot find the specific files. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist at the specified location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline."

Thanks

Sounds like a corrupted Library issue.
On the Misc TAB is a button to 'Rebuild WMP Library' - (Media Center uses the same library)

I ended up using ffdshow and transcode360 with great success and no bloat from other installers or products.

Ok, did that. But now the files don't even pop up anymore when I go to movies. Other files do pop up, but not the mkvs which are in the same folder.

use Explorer to go directly to the file and doubleclick it, If it plays, the links in the library are screwed. remove them, and then be sure to add the directory of files, not a shortcut to the files.

Still nothing. Any other ideas?

Could something have happened when I added my xbox as an extender? Because I did that recently.

if you use explorer to browse to the actual file and doubleclick it, does it play in WMP?
IS your system 64bit? If so, have you installed the x64Components addon?

Alright, it's working! Thank you. But I can't celebrate yet because the audio is very low. So low it can't really even be heard. Any fix for this?

I know its an audio problem, but 1st, try disabling the Microsoft Video decoder on the SWAP TAB in the 64bit settings app.
If that is unsucessful, re-enable it and disable the Microsoft Audio decoder.

Neither worked :( ... any other suggestions? I remember I had this same issue with the last computer I had trying to get MKVs to work. I can't remember how I got around it.

For x64 Media Center playback, you may need to disable the DivX MF splitter on the MKV TAB
