Monitor problems apparently causing system issues

Replacing the system monitor resolved the issue; I think!

Somebody please tell me I'm not going nuts... Issue started simply enough:

MY SYSTEM:

HP 110 DESKTOP (3 MOS OLD)
WIN 7 HOME PREMIUM
1 TB HDD
16 GB RAM

THE MONITOR I WAS USING DID NOT COME WITH THE SYSTEM

I do a lot of writing and some ppt's; virtually no heavy duty graphics other than some Youtube videos

This sequence may not be exactly what I went thru; but it's close enough...

- Downloaded EMET 5.1; all is ok
- About a day later, decided to change screen saver settings ("Bubbles" that comes with windows ) from 5 minutes to 30 minutes...all is ok
- Shortly thereafter,noticed that 'net is starting to be noticably slower
- Little later, notice that system performance is slow overall
- Have had similar issue twice in the past; both times it was due to sleep mode functioning improperly. Set power setting for monitor to always on. Didn't work; system perfromance slower and getting perceptibly worse.
- System so slow at this point can't even do a shut down or logoff ; have to unplug the unit to get it to shut down.
- boot into Safe Mode so I can do a restore
- System Restore: Missing all Restore Points prior to EMET download.
Uh-oh....#!@^&%$#%&&*!!!!!!!!
- Run Malwarebytes full scan; nothing wrong....
- Run Comodo full scan: nothing wrong......
- Hadn't executed CCleaner in awhile; still no help . still can only operarte reasonably in safe mode
- run sfc/ scannow; all system files ok; nothing corrupted
- run chkdsk; Disk is ok...
- boot back Into full mode - minor improvement, but system performance is AWFUL!
- Finally get to Kaspersky to run online scan. Download the small executable. File size is right, but the system never indicates that it is done. Tried Panda as well; same result; Thus, can't execute etiher one.
- Download both executables to the laptop & copy over to affected machine; Won't communicate wth 'net.
- resign myself to system restore. Use recovery USB; won't work becasue Boot sequence does not include USB. Didn't know that if you insert USB then go into boot sequence you could then boot from USB. Learn something new every day.
- boot into Safe Mode again and use HP function to back up my files. Resign myself to do full system recovery from D:
- go to bed; shut down the machine.

- Turn on machine; MONITOR WILL NOT POWER UP! ....#!@^&%$#%&&*!!!!!!!!
Pronounce patient DEAD 15 minutes later
- Go to Wally World & Best Buy -get really good deal on new monitor @ Wally World:
32" LED TV that accepts PC input for $169 - $60 off!
- Hook up new monitor & power up. Since I unplugged it the night before, I elect go into safe mode. Just for giggles, check Sytem Restore. ALL THE OLD RESTORE POINTS WERE BACK!
- RUN RESTORE FROM 11/10
- MACHINE PERFORMS AS IF NOTHING EVER HAPPENED.

QUESTION: What really happened here? Would appreciate if someone can advise... Is there a potential problem with my video card? And why could I now see the old restore points?

Any thoughts/ advice highly appreciated!

I don't know what EMET is, but the sequence of events seems to be -

installed EMET
had problems
restored to a time before EMET
problems fixed

I'd say EMET is causing the problems you described, and that the monitor issue is a coincidence.

FYI: "EMET (Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit) is a powerful free security tool from Microsoft..."

EMET hasn't been an issue before, not that it couldn't be now, of course, Did forget to mention that I had uninstalled EMET - of course, that seemingly took forever, as well. And yeah, I thought that the issues could be co-incidental. That said, I wasn't able to even see the older restore points until after I hooked up the new monitor. In addition, I wasn't able execute anything that seemingly would "fix" my system so that all of a sudden the older restore points would appear. Very Very strange
