More Than 3 Out of 4 Enthusiasts Reject Windows 8

Interesting.

I have never even seen Windows 8.

I built a new computer last Saturday and guess what operating system I installed?

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. :D

I haven't seen Win8 either and nothing I've read makes me want to even acknowledge its existence. I also had this attitude about Win ME and Vista, and IMO skipping those two were good decisions. Win98 and XP were the read deal, but the other two were just minor and flawed interim releases. I also recently built a new system with Win7 x64 and it is stable and fast, and although there was a slight learning curve when moving from XP it hasn't been arduous.

Anyway, my large monitor is a good 3' from my seating position, so does MS really expect me to lean forward and reach out and touch it 1000 times per day? If I had a tablet it might be different, but I can't see ever buying one of those things.

The desktop version of Windows 8, wouldn't require to touch your screen, you would still be using a keyboard and mouse.

If anyone has used or played with Xbox 360 dashboard, then you will see where the inspiration for Windows 8 came from.

There is the proof. Windows 8 should be sold in Toys R Us only.

No Windows 8 for me! I don't like the iOS style of it, but they are all at it; Apple's Mountain Lion is more of the same; Leopard was better IMHO. W8 is ok on a tablet or phone, but I have serious reservations about it as a main OS on desk/laptop.

How to Use Windows 8? Search for It

...But I’ve always been troubled by the duality of Windows 8: the fact that it has two completely different environments. One is for finger operation on touchscreens; the other is the traditional mouse/keyboard desktop.
The traditional desktop runs regular Windows programs (Photoshop, Quicken, iTunes, and so on); the new touchscreen interface, which I’ll call TileWorld, requires a whole new set of full-screen, fairly simple apps.

....My question is: How do you fix something whose founding concept is flawed?

Actually, vista's fail is that it is very slow and sluggish compared to xp or 7. windows 8 fail is only touchscreen ui, it's not like a thing that ms couldn't fix very fast. Plus windows 7 is not worse in any aspect compared to win8, and is better in few aspects, so it's only natural, that smart people stay with 7, and for simple people:mad: there is no need for anything, they just stay with xp

Like to rephrase that, perhaps? :o

My single-parent son and his two teens all use XP because even a 3-user licence for W7 is more than they can afford. Neither of them are "Simple".

According to M$, it won't. Apparently, M$ is trying to force people to adopt Win 8 by making Win 7 harder to use. Still, we can hope they will change their minds. Even an SP that is nothing but a combination of previous updates would be welcome and how hard would it be for M$ to do that?

Impossibly hard because that would mean tanking Windows 8 sales even more.

Hi everybody
Of course on a W7 Forum why should people have any liking whatsoever for W8 .

However seriously folks -- take a TYPICAL NON TECHNICAL user who probably has these applications installed on their PC.

1) IE (or another or several) Browsers
2) Some email client -- possibly Outlook or a clone rather like Thunderbird
3) Facebook / other social media type application
4) Skype or similar with a webcam
5) Some type of Music playing application - Winamp / Foobar or whatever
6) some type of Movie playing application -- WinDVD/Powerdvd / VLC
7) some type possibly of photo editing software
6) Maybe -- Word processing / EXCEL / Powerpoint -- Office student and teacher editions.

Running ANY of these on W8 is really no different to running on W7.
The only difference is you have to click on the desktop Icon from the W8 start menu after Boot rather than get the standard desktop straight from boot with W7.

You NEVER need to bother with those Metro apps if you don't want to.

Any program you want can be pinned to the quick launch taskbar (just like W7) and others can be pinned to the desktop fairly easily.

The sort of users we are talking about here don't have that many applications on their system to warrant HAVING a menu in the first place -- and much as I don't like the W8 Metro GUI currently with those tiles remember if you have loads and loads of applications reading the standard W7 Menu is also a pain.

For users who aren't sure how to get similar program Icons on to the desktop in W8 as you've got in W7 simply do the following from the standard desktop.

1) Windows + X keys --throws up a small menu screen -- choose search.
2) In the W8 start screen which you'll get enter at the top right enter your application name --Photoshop for example.
3) Right mouse click on the Photoshop application shown and select Open File Location (at the bottom of the screen).
4) right mouse click on the link you are shown and choose send to desktop (Create short cut).

Go back to the desktop and you'll see the familiar Photoshop Icon.

Now is that so hard or a "Life threatening Scenario".

Here's part of my desktop on W8 - the only thing that distinguishes it from my W7 system (where I'm running the SAME set of applications is the Start Orb - which you can add via a 3rd party app anyway).
You can use all the W7 themes as well as some new W8 one's -- and I never liked AERO so that isn't an issue for me --and I suspect a whole load of others too.

Can't actually say I was ever a fan of the Start menu in the first place -- If I had to SEARCH for a program I use a lot then I'm not working very smartly in the first place.

I also can't really believe that "Computer Enthusiasts" are unable to devise a few scripts etc to optimize their working practices.

I've found the performance and enhanced security alone of W8 makes it worth looking at -- even though I don't like the tiles. I'm sure this will be modified later and having better synchronisation with mobile devices too seems a decent idea. "Syncing" video from a remote Computer running W8 to a smart TV using my Galaxy S3 mobile is a great app -- no longer need to do anything with the computer itself to stream the multi-media.

But I do repeat here -- I do NOT like the metro tiles or the W8 start screen - but once I'm up and running I never have to look at it again - and the other advantages of W8 are worth the drawback IMO.

Cheers
jimbo

So you like it Jimbo, good. Everyone should have an OS they are comfortable with. How many people in this thread do you think you have convinced that they are wrong?

Jimbo, I think you are wrong. Here is the cry for help (on another forum) of one of your 'typical' users. It does not look like they can manage.

This lady should have bought a Chromebook. Much simpler and cheaper.

My 80 year old sister just got windows 8 on her new HP. Hope I can figure it out for her! I still have Windows 7. Geek explanations assume a lot of understanding! What the heck is a lock screen? How does she get there? All the squares and apps available are very confusing to those of us who do not do Facebook, etc...All she wants is to check her email, look at things, be able to email back and forth, research a little (no icon for Google?) and check her bank account and play games on her game site, Pogo. I wish the 20 year trying to explain things to her at Best Buy had helped her with that, and given her written instructions and not just given her a canned lecture. I can see Internet Explorer is on there, but she does not understand that, so I will try to set up her email, etc. I have a screen shot of Windows 8, maybe I can help her. Hey, there are lots and lots of older folks who do not like the tablet format, and really do not use all those things!

Its a new OS so of course there are going to be those that like and those that hate. Remember the hullabaloo trying to get rid of XP when they brought new ones out and it's still going for some.

It looks like its going to be the same now with 7.

I like it, in fact I'm using it now, I have a group of tiles that relate to my most used forums and just a click takes me straight in already logged in ready to go.

OK still finding things out but there are lots of things quicker than 7 and I like how quick it boots.

You're never going to get everyone to agree about it, but that would be boring if they did. Just use what makes you happy and what works for you.;)

I am running Windows 7 and I will not "downgrade" to Windows 8 because I feel the interface is not designed for a desktop PC. Also I refuse to reward Microsoft by purchasing a product that they could easily have made desktop compatible by giving the user the option to have a conventional start menu. I have tried the Windows 8 preview extensively on a virtual PC and I really dislike the interface.

Windows 8 has it's charms. But for a power user it is a bit cumbersome. I could not refuse the $39.95 offer and run it in virtual. But I am really not doing much with it - just exploring.
