Moving application from physical PC to VirtualPC

My workplace recently acquired several Windows 7 professional machines. Seeing a I'm the primary/only IT person there, I've been responsible for setting up the machines and so far I haven't had any issues except for one machine.

One of the computers that was to be replaced is running various HR/payroll applications on Windows XP professional. Some of them are getting old and I was in a couple of telephone conferences with the companies to determine how well Windows 7 professional supported them. There is varying level of support which I had planned on.

While I was setting up the new Win7 replacement computer, I installed VirtualPC with Windows XP mode. My problem lies in the fact that I maybe unable to find the proper installation disk for this particular program and just copying the folder/files over has proven unsuccessful. This particular program runs along side/on top of an old SQL engine (SQL 2000/SQL 7.5 if I remember properly) so this of course adds yet another layer of "fun" There maybe additional issues I have yet to come accross due to poor documentation prior to my arrival there.

My question is if there is anyway to either "transplant" the application from the physical machine to the virtualPC machine or if I could create an image of the XP machine and run it via virtualization.

Probably not. Is there any way the mfr can provide you with the media?

Short and easy answer is no. Since we switched to a different service, the company no longer provides official support for this particular product. As I mentioned, there hasn't been an official IT position there prior to my arrival and even after being there for some time I'm still coming across things I wasn't aware of. Thankfully I'm young and full of energy and vigor to deal with all the "fun" times ahead.

you could "Virtualize" your old XP machine by doing a P2V (Physical to Virtual) conversion and then use something like vmware or virtual box to run the virtual machine.

There's quite a few threads on this forum about how to create a Virtual machine from an existing physical machine.

Your application should run without any problems.

I run several W2K3 "Virtual servers" running some SAP and legacy applications on them --- no problems at all with the "Virtual Servers".

XP mode promised a lot but IMO has spectacularly failed to deliver - both in useability and performance compared to using more "traditional" Virtual machine software.
