Anyone have a solution to right-clicking on an image file and choosing "open with ms photo editor" only to find it opens with Windows Photo Viewer? Probably a missed Registry change or something, but I can't find it.

I am not sure if clams are truly happy....good point by the way, , however when it comes to MS photo editor, I agree that it's great! As for your problem, is there enough memory on your pc or the type of photo you are trying to edit, it all depends. I know it's not a great answer, just a suggestion.

I would try to find a topic on pixels and maybe you might find your answer. I am certainly not a professional pc user, but I do alot of research on forums. I love Ms photo editor, but I am also looking for another photo editor where I can combine two pics together where it looks flawless. Still researching on this.

Lilly70, I know it has been some time since this was active, but I use Photoshop and there is a picture merge or create panorama feature which does a seamless image combine function.

I ran into that as well but I now just open the app from the Start menu and navigate to files from within the app. Perhaps not so convenient for a power user but I just use it once in awhile. Sorry can't help you other than to confirm I ran into the same thing.

Thank you DStealth! I installed your 64 bit link. However, when cropping, on my Win XP box I was able to drag handles to crop. This version brings up a dialog I must enter some amount of the picture to crop in distance units. Any thoughts?

Update: I figured it out. Have to use the "Select" tool and that will set the desired crop dimensions.

Twain errors with MS Photo Editor

Installed MS Photo Editor in Windows 8.1 Pro 64.
Works fine except for trying to scan from it.
Get these TWAIN errors:
1. First Error

2. Second Error

Second error happens after you close first error and then
hit the scan button again.
Does anyone have a Scanner / Twain working in MS Photo Editor?
Or any troubleshooting routine for this?

FYI: Since the day I installed it, I have been getting Windows Update failures for Office XP Service Pack 3 (Error 0x80096004).

I have never had XP or Office XP on this new PC (just W10 and Office 365), so I suspect it's probably due to installing this Photo Editor. When I look in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features, the Publisher for Photo Editor shows up as "Micro$oft XP".

It's a minor annoyance that doesn't effect Photo Editor or anything else on my PC, and is trivial compared to the benefit (and joy) I get from being able to use Photo Editor again.

Did you get your scanner to work thru MS Photo Editor?

No. It says the version of TWAIN is not supported, as "Photo Editor has detected an older version of TWAIN", and asks for Photo Editor to be reinstalled.

I think Photo Editor is seeing the current (new TWAIN) as an older version. If that's the case the TWAIN gods may never smile on you.

First up, big thanks for keeping the old kiddie going. Pretty much all I want from a photo editor is a quick way to crop, resize and occasionally smooth images and I haven´t found anything to beat Photo Editor for ease of use. I have it running on W8.1 Pro with no problems.
If you hit a big file limit load the image into Paint first, resize it slightly smaller, save changes, then load it into Photo Editor. Works for me anyway.

For those of you having problems loading an image into it by right clicking on the file and using Open With I have good news. Check this out: Send To Manager Lets You Add Shortcuts in Windows Context Menu
Use that to add Photo Editor to the right click>Send To menu.

Not sure if DStealth is monitoring this anymore, but: I installed Photo Editor and it will not open bigger files. When I install the patch it will not open any files. Comments?

Thank you for this information. I do not like having to dig out my old Office disk simply to install the photo editor on each new machine.

In case anyone is curious, I did find out one thing about the jpg file size limit, at least as it applies to XP. I have never had a problem opening my jpg files in photo editor until I tried it on a machine where I had copied photo editor over rather than installing it, so I knew something was wrong. Most of these were between 3 and 4 mb, so I haven't tried any really huge ones, but certainly ones over the 3 mb limit that was mentioned in earlier replies here.

There are already files in Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt that are newer than those installed the last place I did a real photo editor install (98SE). When I copied those over as per the original instructions, I did NOT let them overwrite the existing files, figuring that the newer versions could be important to other applications (given that this is a shared location). When I tried to open large jpg files in photo editor, they failed (small ones would still load fine). After trying some other things, I finally tried renaming Grphflt to Grphflt.old and copying the entire Grphflt from 98SE where I had done the original install. Suddenly, with the older versions in place, the larger jpg files started opening fine.

I am guessing that the newer Grphflt files are preventing larger jpg files from opening for some reason. I haven't tried the installer on this machine, but if I remember correctly, installers usually leave the newer version of a shared file in place rather than replace it with an older version. Since the newer versions (at least those I tried) do not seem fully compatible with photo editor, this installer behavior may be contributing to the problems with jpg greater than 3 mb that were mentioned.

I guess my suggestion is to try copying all the Grphflt files from a previous real install rather than than just those that are additional (after renaming the existing dir so it is backed up, of course). Further, I'm not sure if any files that are already on a given machine would already have been new enough to cause problems (if the installer didn't overwrite those files), so it may be necessary to find and use old versions of files like JPEGIM32.FLT. My files dates that work are mostly from 1996, and a very few from 2000. So, to get the older files in the first place, perhaps try doing a real install with Grphflt temporarily renamed? (I have not tried this, so just an idea)

I hope this helps. I greatly appreciate the information posted here, so felt compelled to offer what I discovered in case it helps anyone.

I came across this thread that seems to have a very long but active life so I am hoping for some help?
My beloved Photo Editor has stopped working, was working fine Windows 10 64bit then stopped uninstalled it tried reinstalling getting message "No file format information can be found in the Registry"

So when I came across this thread and saw lots of happy people who were reunited with their beloved Photo Editor I got all excited, sadly this was short lived after downloading the window installer files, I now have this error.
The installer has insufficient privileges to access this
directory: C:\Program Data\Microsoft\MSDAIPP\Offline
The installation cannot continue. Log on as
administrator or contact your system administrator.

Now here is what I have tried downloaded, a registry patch that will allow you to right click and select option "Run as Administrator" Tried using CMD prompt to run file, tried unzipping the MSI file but there is no .EXE file to run. Tried logging on as Administrator but still get same message.

I do hope someone can help.

Update as of 19:31 12/12/16
Downloaded a copy of MS Office XP, loaded MS Photo Editor ONLY, now have fully operational MS Photo Editor.

Hope this helps anyone looking to resolve the above problem, annoying thing is, is that this has taken me 3 days to resolve.

So glad you were able to resolve the problem --- and very ingenious of you, to install XP in order to get Photo Editor. That's how much so many people love the app, and how high it's valued.

Photoed.exe - Windows 10 64-bit image support

I installed the Photoed package from DStealth on Windows 10 64-bit. It works great, and it supports many image file formats including jpg which I use the most. However, it does not support large image file sizes.

I then proceeded to install the patched Photoed.exe (also provided by DStealth) - and this works except the choice of supported image formats has shrunk to about 4 choices, and jpg was no longer one of the supported formats.

So then, I installed the registry fix, and now when I start Photoed, it produces an error saying no file formats are supported. Although the program does run, I cannot load any images at all - since no image formats are supported - after I've applied the registry fix.

My question is, has anyone got the 64-bit version of photoed working on Windows 10 (or 7) that supports large image sizes, and a large variety of image formats, including the jpg format?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love photoed and would like to able to use it on my new Windows 10 machine and with large images, which today's digital cameras produce in abundance.
