With any program that has it's roots so far back in Windows history there is going to be a point where they no longer work with current systems. I cannot be sure but there may be some 16 bit code embedded in your application or one off it's dll modules.

unfortunately there is no support for 16bit code in any 64 bit OS including but not exclusively Windows, which are the standard these days - you may be able to get it running for within a 32 bit version of windows which is still available for both windows 7 & Windows 10.

The photos app and paint apps in Windows 7 and especially 10 are both reasonable basic options but something like Irfanview should cover all your file type needs and more ( go for the 32Bit if you want to use the basic image editor, the 64 bit has less editing options but will handle huge files with ease).

Also if you have a modern advanced camera then adobe bridge their front line image manage is available free of charge and that will support even the camera raw files and give access to camera raw for image processing ... This is my first post to this website but just had to chime in. DStealth, this saved me a lot of time and helped me make a peer here at work very thankful to get his Photo Editor back. I found a lot of info on the web regarding the missing registry entries but you were the only one to offer them up "to the public" with this much expedition. I (we) appreciate your help!!

This is MY first post here, too!

I had PhotoEd running fine by just copying the exe into the program files directory and setting it as a shortcut and an app that'd handle jpegs and pngs and the like. I didn't have any of the old filters or the like, but I was still happy to have the utility of the vanilla program.

BUT last upgrade to Win 10 meant it stopped working. You could use it okay, but when you went to save it couldn't save the file as anything. Jpeg, TIF, PNG, whatever, the option to save a file was gone :-(

Anyway, I was encouraged when I found this thread.

I managed to track down an Office 2000 CD (not all that hard, I have a big box where I used to be highly organised and have labelled them all well in standard CD sleeves) located all the required files, and installed them as per the earliest post which lists what to put where.

Seeing the filters files, and the .FLT files for the file types was encouraging. I had it installed to the letter, but alas - still couldn't save a file as ANY format. The requester came up blank and so did all the menu items where you'd normally see .PNG, .PCX, .JPG, etc, etc was also blank.

I had my Win 7 system die on me about 5 months ago, and had to buy a new PC, and naturally it had Win 10 on it, so I'm using the latest version of that.

So I thought, okay, let's see if I can run it in compatibility mode - got nothing to lose.

Win 10 recommended I run it as Win XP Service Pack 3 and then offered a nice button I could click on to test it.

It bloody well worked.

So now not only do I have PhotoEd running, but thanks to installing all the graphics filter files as described in this thread, I can now ALSO despeckle, sharpen, posterize, emboss, chalk, charcoal, and all the others I used to use years ago.

Just posting this here, as under the latest upgrade of Win 10 it will NO LONGER run if you're in the slightest bit interested in saving the file... But using compatibility mode makes it work!

Also on the file size limits, I've found this to always be the case - sometime you can open huge files, but other times, if it's more than 1200-odd pixels wide it won't open. Well, the clue seems to be the amount of CONTIGUOUS memory you've got left.

If you've been running a lot of programs, etc, then the files PhotoEd will open get smaller the further you go on. Rebooting the system can often mean you can open a file you weren't able to open before.

Been an hour or two mucking around with this, but it's great when something like this works. Thanks to all the contributors on this thread.

Hi All

I have been running MS PhotoEditor on this current machine Dec 2016, when I posted on here, all was working fine even with a windows 10 upgrade it still worked.

Now as my trusty machine was getting slow I decided to flatline and everything went back on fine apart from one program.

Yes, you guessed it Photo Editor when I try to load any of the programs I get the following error message.

Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32\SOFTVVARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\CSSFilters
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key. or contact your support personnel.

When I navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE32\SOFTVVARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\ using RegEdit there is no CSSFilters key.

I have tried changing the permissions on all key steps leading up to where this key should be, but with no luck.

So I am hoping someone can explain how I can sort this to get this software installed?

I miss Photo Editor, we have grown up together, so any suggestions.

If MS Photo Editor isn't installed from an Office CD (XP or 2002), you still need MS Office Graphics filters for it to work. You need to get these off any version of MS Office CD. MS PhotoEditor downloads are at DStealth's 7Forums Page but I can't find any online link for the necessary Graphics filters. MS stopped supporting MS PhotoEditor in 2003 but it works fine in Win 10 and previous Window versions XP onwards..

Does work on Win 10 for large files

Uninstall and reinstall MS PhotoEditor, then try the patch here (replace the PHOTOED.EXE with the patch exe)

I've no problem opening 5MB Jpeg files with the patched version in Win 10.

Try SFC (System File Check) if you still have a problem. Or reinstalling PhotoEditor off an XP or 2002 version of Office then applying the patch.

Thankyou, finally a fully working Photo Editor

I scanned the files on VirusTotal.com and this is what I got for results:
PE 64bit, PE32bit,

I see 1 finding out of 51 on both so I'ma go ahead and say it's coming up as a false positive. I've had PE 64bit installed on my comp and ran McAfee, Norton, Malware Antimalware bytes, and MS Security Essentials and all came back clean. I try to keep my computer pretty clean, toolbar/malware/virus free and I can say I haven't had any issues with these files on my computer.

I tried the download link I posted and it's asking me to download an EXE file which is NOT what I uploaded so ima say I just made a really bad choice in uploaders.. I'll go ahead and post the files on my server for a few days just so you can download it directly from me. Lemme know when you get it.

Didn't realize people were still wanting the old PhotoEd install files. I took them down from my server a while back. Personally i've swtiched to using Paint.net, it's free n does everything photoEditor could do and more! It's like having a lightweight Adobe Photoshop but for free. There are many addons for it to add more features you may be looking for and I highly recommend it to anyone still looking for the old PhotoEditor.

Would you mind re-posting the PhotoEd files? It's still the best thing going for basic needs. Simple is good - note that Notepad is still distributed by Microsoft!

Does the installation include registry entries? MS removed those from the latest W10 distribution :-(

Yup people still use this! It has one of the easiest to use blending / smudging tools out there.
A feature that really needs added to MSPaint and other Paint programs but is sadly lacking.
Too many programs are filled with extra tools and hard to figure out or use tools. MS Photo-editor
makes the task so much simpler and quicker. It's a pain everytime there's a major update to a new

windows that it has to be reinstalled & tweaked to work. These files are a Blessing....Thank-You!

PhoteEd quit after a week

Thanks again for posting the PhotoEd install media. I installed it on my desktop W10 PC and it worked beautifully for a week. Then, for no known reason, when I tried to save a photo I got an error saying there was a file write error. Since then I've re-installed the 64 bit and 32 bit versions multiple times, and executed the registry patch to no avail.

Any ideas of what has gotten hosed up?

OK, I tried one last thing - to see if I could remove PhotoEd and start over. I turned out that there was a Repair option, and amazingly it worked!

Back in business again, hopefully for a long, long time.

MS Photoed printing

Hello DStealth, Thanks very much for the Photoed patch. Been one of my favorite image edit programs since it was originally issued, and I've been using it (crippled) on systems ever since but with compromises like being unable to save or print. Your patch appears to have eliminated those issues with the exception of printing. Currently running Win 10. Clicking the print icon in the header (directing to my local printer) results only in an "Office" error popup but no crash; Ctrl-P or using the File/Print pulldown crashes the program (simply disappears). I'm guessing this is due to missing Registry keys for printing. Any suggestions on which keys to add?

Hi all,
I am so glad I stumbled across this thread. I LOVE my old PhotoEditor, and use it frequently. So far I just copied the files from machine to machine and it just worked, but I just bought a new laptop (Windows 10), and it doesn't work anymore. I can sometimes seem to open the program, and it "sees" files in the directory but will not open any of them. I downloaded DStealth's files (the zippped folder) but now I'm stuck. Can someone walk me through it and explain what I need to do like I'm a particularly dim-witted person? I would be forever grateful. Thanks so much for any and all help you may be able to provide!

Download a copy of MS Office XP, and install MS Photo Editor ONLY and it should work again. Just copying the files doesn't create necessary missing registry files. Usually that is the cause of most issues of it not working in Win 10 for one reason or another. Installing from a 2002 or earlier Office CD or download will normally fix it. Then you can install or copy the fix for larger file sizes.

Hi, I tried to figure out how to get a hold of XP, and the only thing I found was how to do it on a virtual machine on VirtualBox. That is WAAAAYYYY more complicated than I'll ever be comfortable with. I'm not a computer person. All I want is to be able to use PhotoEditor again. My older laptop, which also runs Windows 10, has no trouble running it.
Does anyone out there know of an easier way to get me to the goods? I'm willing to learn, but I do need baby step instructions... Anyone willing to help me - thank you so much! I have the download from DStealth (further up in this thread); I just don't know where to go from there.
