Win 7 x64, fully patched
MS Visio 2010, fully patched (14.0.7015.100)

I created a database diagram last year and worked on it over a period of time without any issues. According to the time stamp on the file, the last time it was saved was Dec 2017. A couple of months ago, I tried to work on the file, but as soon as I did anything (move a table, add a connector, rename a column, etc.), Visio would lock up (with the CPU showing 13% utilization - this is an eight core processor machine) and I would have to kill it from the task manager. I then tried creating a new database drawing and ran into the same problem.

Next, I tried the same steps on my notebook computer (which is a new machine that build earlier this year). I experienced the same problems.

On my desktop I tried repairing then reinstalling Vision - neither helped.

On my old notebook, which hadn't been updated in a while and which had AVG antivirus, I was able to edit the file. After updating Windows and switching to Avast, the same behavior manifested. I then moved to my wife's PC - I was able to edit the file. Oddly, after updating Windows and replacing AVG with Avast, I am still able to edit the file.

Other things to note:

  • There are no active Visio plugins on my desktop installation of Visio
  • I tried disabling Avast, but that did not change the behavior
  • Nothing appears in the event manager when the program locks up
  • I have tried patience, but even after five minutes, the program is still locked up
  • The problem only occurs with database diagrams, all other templates work without issue
Other than suggesting that I use my wife's computer, can you please offer some ideas of things that I can try to resolve this problem?

What version of the .net framework are you running? Do the symptoms persist if you run Visio application in compatibility mode for Vista?

townsbg: I tried that - the response was a typical, useless MS response.
iko22: I tried Vista compatibility mode - basic and SP2, (good suggestion!) and that did not help

Installed .NET versions: 2.0.50727, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.7.1

I was doing some testing and can be more specific about the issue: I can drag tables around, add a new table, add a connector, etc. Bet, as soon as I click in the bottom pane, for example, to define a table column, that is when the program locks up.
