Hi There;

OS Windows 7 using MS Word 2003

So, I am on my laptop multi-tasking with books, note pads etc and accidentally hit something on the keypad, which changed the header / view. At this point I closed Word without saving but it did not change the view of the header. Oooops!
Anything could have been accidentally clicked, even more than one key. It could have been one of the F Keys because these keys are never used by me (No idea what they do, lol). The header/footer view went from a white background around the text to a grey background. Usually the view would go to the white background around the text after closing the Header/Footer. Now it stays grey (or gray) all the time.
Couldn't find anything on the Header/Footer toolbar. Went to "Format" drop down menu and opened most options that made sense to open. No Luck. Any advice? Thank You.
PS: In 'Miscellaneous Options' below, please explain: 'Automatically parse links in text'

Hi,
You should be able to edit the header and highlight the text on it and see what options appear in the insert/ home sections to undo the background color.

Thank you for the reply, ThrashZone, however this does not show up as a background color. Even with the 'Styles and formatting' opened to 'modify' the background color showed as either clear or none.

Perhaps you made the header entry a field such as "File Name" and have the field set to "display" (which is the shading).

Try Save As a new name then edit the new named file by deleting the head, Save then reenter a new header but not as a field.

GEWB

Header Answer

Finally, the answer has been found.

In Microsoft Word 2003 go to
Tools > Options > View. In the Field Shading box, choose "Never"

Glad you followed up ("Perhaps you made the header entry a field such as "File Name" and have the field set to "display"").
