Hi all,
Hope this can help others with the same problem. In my new systen I had accidentally "always" associated DOC files to WordPad. Then I installed MS Office 2000 (yeah, I know....) with hopes it would still work.
Seems to be okay so far except for trying to open a DOC file from a directory as it couldn't be associated to Word. it was not in the "Open With" options nor available in the associated options page in control panel. I also couldn't find it in the browse search.
I first reinstalled Office, then tried the repair deal suggested elsewhere but still no "MS Word" program to pick from.
I then found an old thread here on the subject in hopes to find a fix:
http://www.sevenforums.com/microsoft-office/112700-ms-word-not-default-file-associations-list.html
It gets into REG editing which I wanted to avoid since it's a new system. and didn't want to chance mucking it up this soon.
SOLUTION: I couldn't browse to the "Word" program to select it since I didn't know where it was even after doing multiple directory searches for it. If you're not laughing at my stupidity by now, note that it wasn't until I read the above link that I learned the program is called winword.exe and not word.exe.
Since the shortcut properties for Word wouldn't show me a location, I figured MS had it hidden or something.
I previously never had a reason to know the programs real name!
Anyway, lesson learned and hope this may keep someone else from pulling out their hair and/or messing up their REG if they don't have to!
Cheers!
Ken
