what recommended leaving things ticked on start up on msconfig

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing everything in msconfig for your startup items, and we'll be happy to take a look at them to recommend ones that you probably don't need to have enabled to run at startup.

I'll let others suggest things to uncheck. I'll just say that you should uninstall Java. You probably will not miss it. (edit: uninstall optimizer pro too. IMHO)

In addition, I would say the first step would be to uninstall any programs that you do not use or need. This will also remove them from running at startup, and save some time.

Be sure to only uninstall programs that you know what they are, and don't want it. If in doubt leave it installed for now, and we'll be happy to help ID it.

Nope - Java pretty much just gets you infected :-(

It used to be used for some minor games inside your browser, but that is harder and harder to find these days.

If you find that you need it, then re-install it. If you don't need it, then you are taking a risk for no benefit.

It's mostly going to come down to what programs you installed that you no longer want or need.

Go ahead and post a screenshot showing all of your Programs and Features, then make a list of which ones you want to uninstall. We'll double check that list first to make sure that they are safe to uninstall.

Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM PRO' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.
