This is a problem I only seem to have encountered since getting Windows 7 on my new laptop - on msn messenger in camera control ( reached through camera settings) all the commands Zoom Focus etc - with the exception of Exposure - are greyed out and are in auto mode. I cannot zoom like I used to on my other laptop (Vista). All the other functions are disabled. This also applies to yahoo messenger in "camera control".

Hi and welcome to the forums , first of all could you fill in your System Specs in User CP and tell us what brand and model of webcam you are using so we can help you further.

If you are using a USB webcam and you downloaded the drivers via Windows Update when you first plugged in the device and didn't bother with installing the driver form the manufacturer's website, it might be the case that it is not a full driver.

If you have a logitech webcam have a look for your Webcam model at Webcams and download the appropriate driver.

Microsoft LifeCam VX-800 Webcam

Hi there

I have a Microsoft LifeCam VX-800 Webcam and on their website there is no advice regarding Drivers. I purposely chose this camera as it was compatible with Windows 7 and indeed it installed with no problems. It is just so frustrating that on my old laptop (Vista) and my old Trust webcam, the Wecam settings/Camera Control had Zoom. Now I find it greyed out in Camera Control and the only command not greyed out is Exposure.

The old webcam is not compatible with Windows 7 as it is an older model.

Thanks for any advice!

Hi, there's no need to quote me in this thread particularly it's a matter of choice, I get notifications nevause I'm subscribed to this thread not because people quote me.

Microsoft say it should work straight out of the box and install it's software automatically which basically means they're being lazy if not all the features work.

I would try using the driver at Microsoft LifeCam family VX-800 drivers.

If that doesn't change my last suggestion would be to run the driver in compatability mode, if you search this forum you will find out how to do that.

If none of this works I'm afraid there's not much more we can do.

I won't be able to reply until next Saturday or Sunday as I'm out of the country with no Internet but I'm sure some other users will be able to help you during this time.
