Multi-boot/Dual-Boot Windows XP on Windows 7

This is after booting XP installer, proceeding with setup and discovering installations, right?

Well since only the text mode of XP is installed, and not GUI yet, i have no idea.

Well that's the problem. I can't continue setup until I replace the missing or corrupted file hal.dll. And because I have no card slot, I can't do it at all.

Look, this is all I can do. If I don't boot into the card, then it gives me the error.

If I boot into XP installer, all I can do it install is part 1 (which I already have)
To Install Part 2, I need hal.dll file. So I can't continue

This is an attempt to discover which installations are now there, and to repair the XP if it shows a valid installation.

This is done by booting into the XP installer, proceeding with Setup until it discovers the installations on the Hard Drive, then see if it finds an XP as well as the WIndows 7.

If it finds an XP installation then that means it can be repaired by then clicking R for Repair.

We at least need to see what installations it finds. I am not interested in adding in the DLL now, only if it can find at least the Win7 installation, and maybe also the XP installation which means it can repair it hopefully.

I have no idea what you mean when you say XP does Part 1 of install, but cannot do Part 2.

The XP installer ALWAYS has the ability to boot to attempt to discover what installations are present, which is all I am asking you to do now. This tells us whether there is something to repair.

It also tells us if Win7 is still there to be recovered by rewriting it's MBR, which we can even do from the XP installer's first "R" for repair option prompt.

EasyBCD is used from XP to add Win7 back to the Dual Boot menu when XP is last installed OS.

We are not there yet.

We need to determine if there is an XP which can be repaired. Are you saying that if you boot the XP installer and proceed with Setup that it will not proceed to find any installations which are there, as it always does? What is the error given then? Try it again now

If not, should he run bootrec and bootsect commands from XP Repair Command line to start up Win7? Or make Win7 repair stick to Startup Repair?

Then troubleshoot the hal.dll file, replace it, whatever? There are a dozen steps on the troubleshooting sheet linked earlier, one of which is to XP repair install which I wanted to try so we could also see what installations XP installer finds.

Are you wanting to boot into 7, but can't?

You can put the 7 repair program on a USB stick - exactly the same as creating a bootable flash for the 7 installation media.

Probably easiest to use an app. that will do it for you. WinToFlash is your best bet , as the others require a 4gb drive ( not sure if WinTo Flash does)

You can't run bootrec and bootsect commands - they are not on the HD. They can only be used from Vista /7 WinRe.

He used Win2 flash to make the XP installer.

Where does he get the files/ISO for WIn7 repair console? He doesn't have flash big enough for full installer.

I don't have a Windows 7 disc or anything so I don't want to lose Windows 7. Can I boot into it somehow?

At the moment it's a 2 GB.

Ok for my Windows XP installer, there are two parts.

1st Installation: Text Mode.
2nd Installation: GUI Mode.

How are you going to put the Hal.DLL in?

Every other XP installer has the ability to at least discover whether there are any installations present. There should not be an error message before you get to that. What is the problem with using this method to see what installations are present on your hard drive?

Well just download the .dll file. I was wondering where does it belong? Like folder and such?

Thanks SIW2. That is an ISO file. Should he write it to flash stick using UltraISO trial?

He tried Ultra to write XP ISO to same stick yesterday and it wouldn't work. Had to add SATA-slipstreamed files using Win2Flash

Maybe Ultra will work on this?

Any opinion of the missing hal.dll error which stopped his XP install in progress?
