Multiple Backup Images

Hi all,
I use the image backup only. (Use another cool software for regular backup). The problem I have is that it keeps only the last Image.
Isn't there a possibility to have multiple images available.
I have a folder which is created by Windows on my backup drive. I just can't find more than one backup,.
Any ideas?

If it only makes one back up, you probably do not have enough space for the second. Try increasing the size of the drive that holds the image.

Thanks. I have a 80GB Intel x25 where W7 is installed. The backup drive is a 1TB WD Black. So there should be plenty of space.
I mean perhaps there are several versions I just can't figure out if it's the case.
Is it incremental?
Any possibility to have just multiple full images.

Try it yourself to be sure. Take several images. Then go to restore from image. Before it actually installs it will show you what is available. If only one is available, it will just install the copy. Either way you lose nothing. If you have more than one, you will see it. If you do not have more than one, you are merley copying a recently made image to your HD.

According to what I read, if the space is there you should have more than one, however several on this forum were complaining that there is only one and that it is incremental. But try for yourself.

Hi all,
here's what I found out. It's an incremental Image backup. Whenever I run the image the folder gets slightly bigger.
Well, hope I'll never need it ...

In regards to its size, should it be the same size as the main hdd? In my system my main hdd has about 50gb used, but the image created on my external hdd is next to nothing? Any ideas why?

my C is 34GB and the initial image was 17. After a couple of images it is now 18GB because it added the changes. The image is compress. What means almost nothing?

Sounds to me like you need to look at Acronis True Image ... The trial DL is fully functional for 15 days

I haven't used W7's Imaging backup .. But from what I've read, it has too many limitations.
With Acronis .. You can create full or incremental backups .. put them in any storage media ..
and have as many as you can hold.

It's also easy to mount an Backup Image as a virtual HD and fetch any data it may contain.

I don't think you really want to make Incremental Backups of your operating system.
Any acquired problems will just modify/corrupt what was a good System backup.

How to make mulitple backup images

Windows names the backup image folder as:

WindowsImageBackup

When you make another backup the above folder contents is rewritten with the new image.

To avoid this problem, rename WindowsImageBackup to WindowsImageBackup1 or some other name. When you a perform new image backup the folder "windowsImageBackup" will be re-created. You just keep renaming them so that you will "force" a new image creation.

When you do a restore, just rename the desired image folder back to WindowsImageBackup. Windows only will restore the folder contents with that name.

I have no idea why Microsoft does this. I think the inflexibility is poorly thought out.. What if you later find out that the last backup image has problems?....well duhhhhh

I don't know if you have solved your problem but I just thought I'll let you know the following fact. In the 'Backup and Restore' window, there's a button called 'Manage Space'. In that, when you click 'Change settings' in the System image section, you have the option of keeping only the latest system image or let Win7 handle it for you. I myself have never let Win7 do so and only keep the latest SysImg and so am not exactly sure this is what you are looking for. If it's not, sorry and good luck. If it is, you're welcome !
