For some reason at some point I ended up with two file locations. (this also is for my picture files). One is documents and the other is my documents. Now over time they of course have differing contents. I want to get rid of whatever is duplicated and have been reluctant to mess with it so I don’t lose the important versions of some files although I want to fix this mess.

I did not specifically want to do this and I believe this happened when I was doing some network or file sharing. I have never been able to make that work. It worked fine years ago, but I can never get the file ownership or whatever to work. If so I would like to know what not to do so the system does not ever duplicate file locations again. And also does anyone have a good idea how to weed through these files so I do not delete any of the more recent versions of the documents? The picture file shouldn’t be too hard to do manually, but the documents files are going to be a time consuming mess if I have to compare all of the files. Thanks.

If the file names are the same then read over the documentation of FreeFileSync. That program can sync via compare and contrast rules. There may even be some YouTube tutorials that you could check into.

As to how it happened in the first place and how to mitigate it from happening again, I have no idea. Documents is in Windows 10 though. Did you copy or move that to Windows 7? Or perhaps two different My Documents folders and one got auto renamed.

As to taking ownership, this may help. Take Ownership Shortcut

Ok I will give that a try. It was a while back but I am pretty sure it was not from any kind of transfer. I think it just showed up somehow after some action I guess I took. I have problems coming from every direction in life so I can't always do what I want. But I needed to address it as soon as it happened before it became even more of a problem!
