Solved My administrative account is not allowing administrative priveleges

Hi, I just completed a factory reinstall of my HP Computer, 64-bit, Windows 7.

I only created one user account at the prompt, as the computer was setting up.

I've made sure that the account is listed as having "administrator".

However, after installing a number of programs onto my computer, I find that some of them only run after checking "run this program as an administrator" checked in the properties settings.

That's fine, I don't care about that. The question I have, is that there are some programs that specifically won't install because they claim I do not have administrative privileges, and some of the installers do NOT have "run this program as an administrator" even as an option, so I cannot install some software, even though I have as much administrative permissions as I think is possible.

Is there a reason why the only user account on the computer wouldn't be seen as an administrator, even though I have myself set as an administrator?

A warm welcome to SevenForums! To assure yourself that you are indeed the Adminitrator,try this indirect trick: In the search box type "uac" (without quotes) and if it displays "Change User Account Control Settings", then you are the Admin.

I downloaded the msi "run as administrator" thing, and that was nice to see.

I also did a search for uac, and saw what you say I should see if I am administrator...

However, I am still getting the problem where when I try to install one software, it tells me I do not have sufficient rights. I'm assuming that I could enable the hidden administrator user, and install it from that, but then I wonder if I could ever run that software from my normal user, or would I have to continue to only use that software from administrator?

Anyway, this only started happening today, after doing a factory reboot, so...we'll see what happens. Still not sure why it would tell me I don't have administrative rights if I'm an administrator.

See if you can, now make a new administrator account, the first one is corrupt.

Create another account with administrator privileges and see if you still have the same problem.
If it works, copy your data to the new account.

Refer to the second link of @rich, and In Accessories>cmd> Rifht click and "run as administrator"(elevated previlege)>type net user administrator /active:yes

Kindly post what is displayed in the cmd as a thumbnail.

First when you install windows 7 the account you create is made into an admin account. What you might not know is that it's not a true admin account. It's what i''m calling a sub-admin account. I will discuss it further once your reply comes in!

When I type "net user administrator /active:yes" I get the return:
The command completed successfully

Also, I actually was just starting to think that the created user must not have "real" administrative privilege, because here's what's going on:

I'm running an old 3ds Max on my windows 7.
Normally, the trick is to set the properties to 1. run as administrator and 2. disable desktop composition, and it then works (otherwise, there's weird compatability issues, I don't know how it all works)

However, this time, I couldn't even install the old 3ds Max onto the computer...until I turned on the hidden administrator and went into that account.

Then, I realized that in the Administrator account, I don't need the "run as administrator" option checked (obvious, I suppose).

Then, I went and created a new user from the administrative account, gave that user administrative privileges, logged into that new user account, and could only run the 3ds max program when the "run as administrator" option was checked.

Long question short: is there a way to give my non-"administrator" account "real" administrator privileges?

If you disable the UAC, you can have additional priviledges.

Wow, thank you both so much for your help and understanding.

I'll have to look into changing my uac later, there was a lot of information on those pages, and I've got a lot on my plate. But I'm glad I have a bit more understanding about this.

Dear anarchy ABC,
If you are entering a "default" password,every time you log in, uncheck the "password never expires" and select "change password on next log in". Since there are no group users on your computer (i guess so), change the password on next log in! That should give you full Admin. rights.

The downside of operating the PC as a fully previleged Admin. is, all your programs are vulnerable to "Malware Shrapnel"! So,you must have at least one Security software running in "real-time" with "stop at the gate"ability.
I can out right suggest MalwareBytesAntiMalware-Pro version (Download site: Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer and/or an Anti-Virus program like MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials). My vote for a top AV would go to Avira internet security suite. Download site: Avira Internet Security and they are worth every penny or cent you invest on them.
