Hi,

I am new to the forums but have seen a few posts whilst trying to fix my problem. You seem like a helpful bunch :) so I decided to join up.

I regularly google if I have a computer problem I cannot sort myself. Please accept my apologies if the solution to my question has already been answered but I cannot find a solution.

I was running Windows Vista 32bit on my Dell Inspiron 1545. I then decided to install Windows 7. I installed the 64bit version. Everything seemed ok apart from my CD/ROM drive. It works now and again but will suddenly disappear. I have seen people saying clean it but I dont think this is necessary as it worked a treat on Windows Vista. I tried to burn a disc in Windows Media Player but it says "connect a burner & restart the player". I have tried deleting the filters in the regedit. I have this morning re-installed Windows 7 but instead installed the 32bit version hoping this would solve the problem. I am tempted to put Vista back on the machine :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards
Jay

Installing the Intel matrix storage manager should fix it if not post back - you will find it under sata drives on your driver page below:

LOL. Got my hopes up bigtime then but unfortunately nothing changed. Now the drive will not open which makes me think that maybe it does need replacing? Strange though because it worked a treat on Vista.

I installed Intel Matrix Storage Manager (AHCI) because the other two are for Notebooks.

What have you there? - I thought it was a laptop.

That driver you tried to install maybe the cause - go here and download - uninstall the driver first - post back what you have if you havent a notebook before you try the below driver. I t might be one of the seagate drivers needs to be installed from the dell site below the matrix drivers - Im confused now - help would be appreciated.

This is the Intel diver it includes most intel chipsets including notebooks - its the driver I thought you would install -
You will find it at the intel site - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
Select chipsets - chipset software - intel(R) matrix storage manager - Select Operating System - select Windows 7 (64bit OR 32 bit) - select drivers - select intel(R) matrix storage manager 8.9.0.1023 - download and install.
(make sure you don't download the floppy configuration utility by mistake) - it will show up if you select utilities.

Hi mate,

Many thanks for the replies. I have sorted the issue (well you have ;)). I saw on another post you mention AHCI is the problem so I installed the Notebook version of Intel Matrix Storage Manager because I have a laptop. I thought it said Netbook at first glance. I also updated the BIOS. I was on version 4. I installed version 13 I think it was.

Restarted and everything is fixed. :D:D I was worried because the tray wouldnt open so I thought it was broke but its not.

Another problem you might be able to solve. My IPOD is not recognized in my computer. iTunes recognises the iPod but it doesnt show in My Computer. I need to access the iPod files.

Thanks again matey. Very happy.

Jay

Do a search for the ipod in the windows seven forums, as you need first hand experience - I've never used ipod - i will do it for you and see what shows up.

Windows 7 Forums the biggest Windows 7 discussion forum, friendly help and many Windows 7 tutorials that will help you get the most out of Microsofts new Windows 7 Operating System. - Search Results for My IPOD is not recognized in my computer

Here is a solution I found : http://www.astahost.com/info.php/windows-recognizing-ipod_t4798.html
Here is what worked for me:
Go to the system's Device Manager. Locate the entry for the Apple iPod/iPhone. In my case, it was under something like "Mobile Devices" -- It was wrongly associated to the Microsoft MTP driver instead of the USBAAPL driver. You might need to select view->show hidden in order to see the entry.
Right-click this guy, and update the driver by selecting the location on the HDD by yourself. The location to the proper driver is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
You might need to resetart both Windows services: "Apple Mobile" and "iPod Management".

Hi mate, I've had the exact same problem and just this minute found the solution. Go into control panel>system and security>administrative tools then double click on computer management. This brings up a new window... then... on the left side click on device manager and click on the little arrow or plus sign next to the Universal Serial Bus Controller option. Find the iPod in there (hopefully!) and right click and update. If it's not in there, it may be one of the USB mass storage devices, so update those. If it's still not one of those (mine wasn't but that's where Apple said it would be) have a look in Portable Devices, which is further up the list of devices to be managed. Then update. This worked for me on Windows 7 Home Premium, so yeah.. hope this works for you too!

Do you store other info on the ipod other than music? If you don't then just use itunes or mediamonkey to work with your ipod. If you do have other files on it, look at turning the ipod to HDD mode.

I also have inspiron 1545, and my dvd keeps disappearing.

I tried to install the intel driver mentioned above, and it became worse -> the dvd even had not appeared.
So i unistalled it, and now it reverts back to appear -> disappear.

Any assitance will be appreciated!!
