Hi, having a bit of trouble with my system crashing while it is idle. It has not crashed while I have been using it. I have turned off sleep/hibernate na do not have a screan saver. I must admit my ancient Sony monitor is nearing EOL.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Technet subscription)
Os installed just a few months ago, was Windows 7 Proffesional x64 prior and never had an issue with it. Hardware is the same.
Recently upgraded to latest bios and Intel RST drivers but problem persists.

Cheers and thanks.

Dumps blame atikmdag.sys, your ATI display drivers

- Boot into safe mode with networking
- Uninstall the ATI drivers including Catalyst Control Center
- Use driver sweeper to remove leftover ATI display driver files Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
- Install the latest drivers ATI Radeon
- Reboot into normal mode

Code:

Thanks for your assistance. Sometime after installing 10-11 drivers from ATI a Windows update loaded an updated driver which I think is about the time the issue started. I had installed 10-12 drivers after running the uninstall but the problem persisted. This time ran Driver Sweeper as well, then installed 10-12 and the latest drivers for the ATI tuner card (10-4 I think).

I thought it might have something to do with Zune software going into idle screen saver mode, but it uses GPU hardware acceleration, so most likely ATI driver. If problem persists I will roll back to 10-11 nad stay there.

Woke up this morning to a soldi white screen of lock up. I have a Nvidia card I might try this weekend or might roll nback to the 10-11 drivers.

Noticed several posts at the AMD forums concerning 10-11 and 10-12 drivers. Most were running XP SP3 but wondering if related.

Thanks Carl. I installed the latest driver from Realtek's site after posting the dump files. It may have helped since the PC survived at least yesterday.

Yowanvista and CarlTR6 thanks for your help. I waited a long time to go to Vista, waiting for a freebie from Microsoft. I finally got it but it didn't stay after the beta of 7 came out. Have never had a problem with 7 until lately, but the pc has held up for two days after running driver Sweeper and installing the latest GPU and Network drivers.
cheers!

Well the PC has been its old stable self, without a hitch. I have had a couple of systems at work with similar issues, but I don't have the luxury of waiting to see if the issue has been fixed. They are testing other computer hardware so as a base system I need them to be stable. Swapped the ATI card (was a silent card with no fan, so over heating could have been an issue) with an Nvidia card and it fixed the issue. Even on a new build where I just installed the 12-12 driver without CC.

Anyway thank you all for your help, I commend you for offering such a great resource.

The solution works if you have a bunch of hardware available to swap out components, such as I have on the job. For my home system uninstalling the ATI drivers and using driver sweeper did wonders. Might of help to update the NIC drivers as well. From now on I will run Driver Sweeper before updating my video card drivers. :)
