there are software packages like "recuva" that will recover date, but to recover the entire partition is much harder. First how did he delete it and has he reformated, or installed anything to that partition

I don't know. He just texted me and said he accidentally broke windows and is now using Unbuntu.

I have used the Active product. Interface is not smooth, a real pain, but: it worked.

As above, If your freind has installed Ubuntu onto the PC rather than just using the test version, Ubuntu would have reconfigured the partitions as part of the instalation.

If they are just running it from live cd, there may still be hope.
