my iPod touch doesn't sync but Nano does

Kay so I have Windows 7 64-bit and am using iTunes version 9.0.2.25.
My 8GB iPod Nano syncs fine, Windows 7 recognizes it as an iPod Nano when I check "Devices and Printers". It works with iTunes, opens up right away as it's supposed to and I can put music on it.

Now my 32GB iPod Touch is a different matter. Using the same usb port and cable, I plug in my iPod Touch and iTunes opens and attempts to sync. Eventually, it stops syncing, then I see it in iTunes as my what I named it, capacity at the top is 29.28 GB. Weird thing, at the bottom, capacity is only 4 GB (about 2 GB left)!?!?

Then I check "Devices and Printers" and it shows under "Unspecified" - Apple Mobile Device USB Drive. Under properties I see model says "iPod". It doesn't show any errors with it, other than the fact this isn't how it shows up for my iPod Nano, and I believe it's not syncing correctly. It charges fine, by the way, while plugged in.

iTunes still shows my iPod Touch attached, I can see all the files and music on it, but it won't sync or transfer any new files.

I'd like to get this working properly. Any suggestions?

Well this doesn't help me too much, both iPods work on Windows XP on a different computer. I did have an issue with my usb ports afterwards, but I unplugged my power supply for a while, then plugged it back in and it worked fine.

On this computer, I'm not trying to have both iPods in at the same time, or creating different users or libraries, I just want to be able to unplug and plug my iPods in (Nano and Touch) and have them work properly. My Touch is having issues no matter where or when I plug it in, restarting and unplugging my computer didn't help either. I don't find any other issues with my usb ports either.

I think this is a Windows 7 issue hence why I'm posting here on a Windows 7 forum.

And a lot of the time it's nothing to do with the OS but the user, and as you've already stated you did actually have an issue with XP too, it could be to do with it not being configured properly to use two ipods, as your issue as stated is a sync one.

I'm willing to admit it's probably a user error, certainly. I do not know my way around Windows 7 at all. Maybe it's something basic I'm missing here and just can't figure it out.
But the link you posted has only 3 methods and it's more about how to share music between 2 iPods:
The 1st is to have two Windows Login Users, which I do not want.
The 2nd has the option to set up 2 iPods with different playlists. Again I don't want this.
The 3rd has me creating a separate iTunes library for both iPods. I do not want this either.

There's no troubleshooting for sync errors, which is what my problem is with my iPod Touch.

Other than the link you posted, any other suggestions to get my 2nd iPod (Touch) synced with Windows 7? It's not even recognizing it as an iPod Touch, more of an "Apple Mobile Device USB Drive".

It may be a conflict with another storage device

I built a new computer for my daughter and put 32 bit Windows 7 Premium on it. The first thing I discovered was that her old HP All-in-One did not have any Windows 7 drivers. So I went out and bought her a new "Windows 7 certified" HP Officejet 6500 All-in-One USB-connected printer. I downloaded the Windows 7 drivers from the HP web site and they installed and the printer, and all of it's functions, worked perfectly.

Then she got a new iPod Touch for her birthday and followed the instructions for installing it along with iTunes. Nothing has worked right since. There clearly is a device level conflict between the iPod and the printer -- or at least so far as how they are installed/configured.

It will connect and synch an iPod Touch device with iTunes perfectly just so long as the printer is not installed or, at least, not connected. Also, since the iPod has been installed there seems to be a conflict with the printer's scanner device. It will not work whether the iPod is connected or not. I suspect that the iPod is using a drive letter that the printer is also attempting to use for the scanner. When I connect the iPod, it is detected, brings up iTunes, and then begins the synch process but never completes it because the drive [letter] it thinks is the iPod is actually attempting to connect it to the printer. By the way, the iPod Touch device does not assign a visible drive letter when installed or connected.

I've used console manager to change the printer's disk drive letter assignment -- it likes to use D: when installed. That doesn't change the portable drive letter assignment that shows up in device manager until I reboot and I think that the whole assignment conflict is getting shifted together when it reboots. After rebooting, the new DLA takes effect in device manager but the iPod, when connected, still has the conflict. If I turn the printer off the iPod will successfully connect and synch.

It appears that even when I successfully change the drive letter for the printer's storage device (integrated card reader) it is not being changed for the scanner device in the printer. It will report scanner device not detected errors and stop the imaging service.

Now this story just gets sadder... I guessed that it might be Windows 7 related so I built a complete new machine and installed 64 bit Vista Ultimate on it. I then followed all of the same steps and got all of the same results. The only difference being that it was different hardware running 64 bit Vista vs 32 bit Windows 7.

I've seen lots of issues with the iPod and drive letter conflicts discussed on the web but the only "fix" that appears to sometimes work is to try to avoid letting other devices use the "invisible" DLA -- usually E: -- of the iPod device. I've changed the second drive's letter assignment to X: and when I look at available drive letters D thru W are available.

I'd love to hear from someone who has both a HP all-in-one and a iPod Touch running under Windows 7.

Interesting story howardwoodard, and I'm all the more grateful I did not buy an HP, as there was a sale on at the local FutureShop and I almost bought one. The PC I did decide on ( Buy the iBUYPOWER Gamer Extreme 908 SLC Desktop PC at TigerDirect.ca ) has been running great, and only windows media player, iTunes and trying to sync my iPod Touch has caused me stress.

I do have something in common with your story, a USB printer, that I haven't gotten around to installing the drivers that came with it, as this is a week old PC and I rarely print. But maybe I should get that device working first before I attempt my iPod Touch again, since I did connect its cable to my PC.

Strange to think another USB device conflicts with another, but it's worth a shot. Thanks for sharing.
