My start up is slow!

I've been running Win7 build 7000 since it came out, and I have never been too impressed by its boot time. I clocked how fast it boots yesterday and it took 1min 30. I've gone into my start up programs and disabled several of them, but my computer is still slow on start up. Got any ideas about how to speed it up.

P.s. i'm running a dell xps 1330 with 4gigs ram, a 220gig hard drive and 2.4ghz processor.

People have reported from around 45 sec to 90 secs on average. My lap top with 7 7022 32 bit takes 35 secs to the log on screen and about another 10-15 secs to a fully loaded desktop. So your 90 secs doesn't really seem that long to me. My old vista used to take almost 3 mins to a working loaded desktop. Now that was indeed ridiculous! I am LOVING win 7.

What kind of RAM? brand and type.... dual channel works like a monster vs single chan for windows 7... In my experience 3gb of single runs slower than 2gb of dual. This OS craves dual chan memory IMO

Have a look at your 'services' and disable any you don't need, there are quite a few unnecessary ones in there

I put Windows 7 Ultimate x64 in my laptop MSI and starting windows is verry slow... like 2-10 minutes! What I can do?

I upgraded to windows 7 last week, I´m running on a HP desktop with 6Gb RAM, 8Ghz cpu and so on...it takes one minute to come to the log in, after that I have a "welcome" screen for like 30sec and after that the screen turns black in 90 sec...then it all starts all of a sudden.
That doesnt fit with me...something must be wrong.

And...yes I have updated several things, virusprogram, graphic drivers, I have moved from SATA0 to SATA2 as someone said in a similar thread.

The only thing that really helped was updating the virus program..it cut the boot time from 5min to 3min. So it seems there is something more to do.

When I ran on Vista it took about 90sec to start (I always start from computer turned off, no sleep mode or anything). I heard that seven was so fast to start...disappointed....or...perhaps not...it works great otherwise.

Right now I´m at work so I cant exactly pin-point my spec. on my computer. But I´m using F-secure virus program since it is included in my internet operators deal.
But I have a HP pavilion m9760sc if that helps...1Tbyte harddrive, Intel® Core™2 Quad-processor Q8200, Intel® G33 express, 64-bit OS.

And I updated from vista home premium 64.

Startup also slow when using External Drives

My startup is also slow when I use external drives, When i have tmy external hard drives plugged in I get past the initial boot into a black screen for like 30 seconds and then into the login screen. No black screen at all when the hard drives are unplugged. Anyone got a clue how to fix this?

227sec to reboot...checked it yesterday. Did some work on it and the best reboot time I got was 188sec. But after upgrading my HDX drivers I was back at 218sec

I havent tried to unplugg my external driver, perhaps that will help some but the black screen I get after log in for 90sec is very irritating. THAT is where the problem lies for me.

Did you execute a clean install, or did you upgrade to Windows 7?

If you executed an upgrade, then you might want to try the clean install method.
Don't forget to save and secure your valuable data, before clean install.

na, I upgraded since I wanted to be "sure" all my data was intact...which it was.
The most irritating problem is that it works so well otherwise so a clean install feels like overkill.
And what if it doesnt help...hmm

As I understand, a clean install is not what you like, but on the other hand, it makes a fresh system, nothing left of previous installed OS's.

It takes not that much time, so why not?

Old files could be stored in windows.old, but do NOT count on that!

Save and Secure all data you want to keep, before executing the clean install.

gaaah...I am most worried about retrieving all updates and drivers again...*sigh*
The installation worked so fine...it had to be too god to be true :huh:

i would suggest the same thing, a fresh install. i done an upgrade once so i wouldnt loose my program data, well i didnt really lose it but most software was un-usable. so now i just stay away from an upgrade. always far better to start fresh IMO. that black screen would tell me a graphics driver issue, like when i do a clean install of my graphics driver (cos i use quad sli) it will go to a black screen after login after the first reboot from the install then it says sli disabled/enabled. which is why i would suspect a graphics driver.
but none the less if i were you, backup what you need and start fresh then you will also have a clean registry.

Okay, a fresh install made...starts up at least a bit faster. But of course I missed some savings before installing.
My windows live mail...where did it save the e-mails on the hard-drive? They should still be around somewhere on the windows.old file? Or? (they are gone now anyway)
