Need a USB card for Win 7

On my new Win 7 64 bit PC... I need to find a USB card to plug in to the mobo so I can have at least 4 USB ports on the back side. I don't care if it's USB 2.0 or 3.0, I just want it to plug-n-play like they do on an XP machine.

Anybody know where I can find this that will work on Win 7?

If I understand your post correctly, you want an internal USB card that will add extra rear ports to your new PC.

I'd be less concerned about Win7 compatibility than with physical compatibility. What would fit? PCI, PCI-E (PCI Express)? Full height, low profile?

It'd be helpful if you told us what the new PC is like.

Maybe a powered hub? It'd be clunkier than a card, but at least you wouldn't have to worry about it fitting. (Compatibility isn't guaranteed, though.)

I was able to find a Belkin USB card that had a NEC chip and Windows picked it up just fine.

It's a standard new tower and mobo that has plenty of room for add ons.

That doesn't help with the questions asked above, but that's a non-issue anymore. I think you were making it out to be more complicated than it had to be. Pretty much any USB card would have worked, and if drivers weren't loaded automatically, you'd be able to find them from the manufacturer.

Exactly. It would be crazy for any manufacturer to produce a USB card that is not compatible with Win 7 as it would severely limit their market.

Actually, the reason I posted here was because I had already tried 2 USB cards that did not work with Win 7, one of which had a Win 7 logo on the box to deceive people in to thinking it would work on Win 7... although mine is 64 bit so maybe that was the problem.

Neither of these first two had a NEC chip, which apparently is a later model chip... but this Belkin one that I just installed has this and is workin great.

If it had the logo, then it is supported. Did you try installing drivers for it, or did you just try to let Windows find them automatically?

That's not always true 100% of the time... especially with Chinese made products.

Windows could not find and install the driver for these first 2, and they even came with a CD that had the driver and Windows still could not install them.

The Belkin unit I'm using now came with no CD with drivers, but when I booted up Windows found it, quickly installed it, and it works perfectly. The first 2 did not have "NEC" on the chip, but the one from Belkin did

Apparently some electronics from China are pure crap, while others work great.

Some companies take old stuff and sell it wholesale knowing that most of the time they won't get charged back for it. It happens, especially from China!

Since these first 2 were generic, no name brands from Fry's Electronics... those manufacturers have no reputation to uphold since nobody knows who they are anyway.

Glad you got your money back, but with legit brands, the logo's meaning is true. The moral is to always stick to legit, trustworthy brands.

Yes, and sometimes the definition of "legit brands" is kinda like getting a politician to define his position during election time... they all be tryin to be all things to all people

It's not as difficult as you might think. For example, you mentioned the no-name brands and then eventually got a Belkin. Belkin is a very well known peripheral brand. Fry's should have had plenty to choose from, or else Newegg would have given you many options.

Yeah, ya gotta keep an eye on Fry's as they are scammers...

When I was there they had some t-shirts on a display on sale for $8, but later on my receipt I noticed they charged me $18 for the t-shirt, not $8

I won't be back there unless it is an emergency. They sell mostly noname crap anyway.
