Need help booting into my bootable Acronis flash drive

Hi all :)

Not sure if this is a W7 thing, or...

I use Acronis 2015 to image my OS drive. I have a bootable USB flash drive that I have created. Put the drive in a USB port, boot into it, and go through the steps to restore an image. All works fine... until a little while ago.

Tried booting into the flash drive, but it just hangs at the MB splash screen. Tried several times, diff port, diff stick. Nada. I can boot into Windows just fine, but not the stick. I can see the contents of the stick while in Windows.

So I go into the bios boot menu, and find this:

boot.jpg

It's been a while since I have been in there, so I do not know when/how I wound up with all of those EUFI entires. I assume this is the cause of my issue. Any idea what is going on here, and what I can do?

Don't know if this is of any help, but maybe it will be:

boot2.jpg

Thanks in advance.

I would just rebuild the bootable Acronis flash drive

I did. I tried a different flash drive.

Since booting is a function of the Bios, and not Windows, I think I'd try doing a full reset on the Bios.

I would do that by removing the CMOS battery, after removing all power from the system, and leave the battery out for about 30 minutes, then replace the battery and go into the Bios to reset the time and date.

If you have a volt meter, check the battery to make sure it's at 3.0vdc or better. If it's less than 3.0vdc, replace the battery.

Good Luck,

May have to reset the BIOS. If you have any customization in the BIOS you will have to key that in after the reset.

Thank you for the replies.

Tried resetting the CMOS - did not help.

Called ASUS, and they told me I need to update the BIOS to the latest version. Problem is, as with the Acronis flash drive, I can not boot into the flash drive with the BIOS on it. It hangs at the MB splash screen.

Yes, I am pressing delete :)

Any other options here?

Thanks.

Another piece of info

I have a DVD drive, but it's not hooked to the MB. I powered down, hooked up the drive, and with nothing in the drive, I still can not get into the BIOS screen. It still just hangs at the splash screen, with me hitting delete.

Sounds like a possible BIOS corruption. Try the BIOS reset again. With the PC Powered off and the AC Power cord disconnected, remove the CR2032 CMOS backup battery on the motherboard for at least 10 minutes (Intel says 15 minutes). Reinstall and connect AC power cord and give it a try again.

Ok, will try that. I removed the battery for a bit, but not nearly that long. Thought it was only a few secs.

If not, an ASUS rep told me I can do a BIOS flashback, by pressing a button on the MB. Is this an ok thing to do, or not recommended. I was told it's the same thing as doing it the normal way, but am still unsure.

Thanks.

Give the reset a try. If that doesn't do it you can use the flashback. You are luck, many motherboards do not have that option.

Success!

So, resetting the CMOS did not do it. Left the battery out and the jumper over for about 1.5 hrs while I was shopping. Nada.

Turns out, I was able to update the BIOS. I was under the impression that you had to have the usb stick in a port while accessing the BIOS (F2/Delete at splash screen). Wrong. (I have never done this before). I entered the BIOS, entered the flash utility, and THEN plugged in the stick. I was then able to successfully update the BIOS, and all is well.

Any idea how those things got there, and what I can do to avoid that from happening again?

Cheers.

Hard to tell what happened. Chalk it up to "Murphy's Law" (Murphy's Law says 1 plus 1 hardly ever equals 2).
