I had a problem with Win 7 and needed to reenter the activation code a second time. Since then the computers been buggie, any help is apprecated.
I ran a scan "SFC \scan now", the message states "unable ot fix corrupt file refer to CBS file (almost 12 MB), it's over the limit to attach to the site.

If anyone has a recommandation I'm open to ideas, I assume the next step is to start over and reinstall everything.

Thanks again!

i purchase the Windows 7 from Tigerdirect and activated after the install.

I tried to run to upgrade function from to install disk to maintain to applications I have installed but it does not support that action with the user folders on the z drive.

Then move the User folders back to C to run the Repair Install.

User Folders - Restore Default Location - Windows 7 Forums

It's better to copy the User folders to the other drive then right click each to link to Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums. Once the data drive copy appears in the library you can delete the content of the User shell folder on C.

If you'd rather you can also take this opportunity to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which steps are the same for retail. I would delete all partitions during install after backing up your data and wipe the HD first with Diskpart Clean Command

I think you're right.

Is there a document on how to correctly handle a Solid State Drive, mine is only 60 GB and at one point was over 50 GB of data. I did edit the registry so I assume that my be the problem and clean install in best.

Thanks again for the help!

Dave

Davey Win7 will handle the install to SSD itself so there isn't really anything that needs to be done unless a problem with performance arises afterward.

With 50gb I'd put the OS, page file and your most-used programs on the SSD, user data (linked to libraries) and lesser used programs on the data drive along with image storage.

I did a clean update and have it installed on the SSD. I hunged up the second drive (with all my data) and it's not opening.
It'd detected but shows Failed under disk management. It appears in the disk management as foreign status, disk 1 - type dynamic and capacity of zero MB. The remaining allocation 931 GB is listed as missing, dynamic and status of failed.
I have all of my data there, any ideas. This is a killer, I used the drive as my data source and can't figure it out.

The HD is probably dead, but to try to do everything to get your data:

Did you convert the HD to Dynamic, which is meant to span a partition across multiple HD's but can convert if you ignore a warning that you have too many Primary Partitions?

Did you unplug it during WIn7 install?

Plug it in and post back a screenshot of the maximized Disk Mgmt drive map and listings showing all columns expanded -using the Snipping Tool in Start Menu, attached using Paper Clip in REply box.

You can try to repair it using the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan followed by Disk check. If the HD is still good it may be a file system failure which can be repaired by Disk Check or Partition Wizard's Check File System.

We need to figure out whether to Convert back to Basic, run Partition Recovery Wizard or Data Recovery first.
Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk - option 4 only to save data
Partition Wizard Partition Recovery Wizard - Video Help.
Recuva - Features

Thanks for writing back.
During the installation I unplugged the data (SATA) calbe. Not the correct way I'm sure now.

I'm not sure what happened exactly as I've never seen this before, but you ended up with two Dynamic disks which are only intended to span a partition across multiple HD's.

Did you have your data on a spanned Dynamic partition over both HD's and then broke the spanned drive by unplugging the second HD to reinstall to the first?

If not then do you know how you ended up with both disks Dynamic when HD"s must be converted to become Dynamic? If you know how this transpired we may be able to help you more.

You can try running Recuva on the larger HD but I doubt it can be recovered unless you know how this happened so we can try to sequence undoing it.

Otherwise you need to convert both HD's back to Basic using Option 2 from Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk after backing up your data.

Then boot the Win7 installer to repartition the first HD to reinstall Win7 following the illustrated steps in Clean Install Windows 7 . After reinstall repartition the second data HD in Disk Mgmt.

In the future remember Dynamic Disks are only to span a partition across multiple HD's, and if you're ever prompted to convert to Dynamic because you already have four Primary Partitions and need to add another, then instead convert one to Logical using Partition Wizard which will allow you to add as many adjacent Logicals as you want.
