Need Router help

Carl it's a DSL connection.. My error.. YOUR connection sounds almost like mine.. I do NOT have satellite

I should have done that as well.. how can I get that connection made now ?
I don't recall anyone saying I should have taken care of that action at first.. I could have missed it.. perhaps they are so used to knowing that needs to be taken care of.. it's just natural for those in the know.
The router is a wireless .. Wi Fi
Right now I have my DSL service throught sbcglobal.net.. / telephone line.. modem / ethernet.. yellow cable to the pc tower... Belkin router /wireless /Wi Fi
This is how it's connected to the desktop.. PC tower.. router / modem./ Ethernet/ power... unless I'm totally off base with this.

Well I've typed and typed.. now nothing is showing at all.
I have DSL. with Sbcglobal.net.. using a phone line.. with a modem/ Ethernet
On the modem I see 5 green lights. power /Ethernet/ DSL.Internet/Activity
on this Belkin Router( Wi Fi ).. I have 5 icons green all active: top one Security
wired (desktop/router/modem/internet
I should have made sure my DSL account was on the laptop before I did anything about the router.. I see that now.. I don't recall anyone saying I needed to do that first.. I could have missed it however.. .It could ahve been that no one mentioned that part since .. you all know that as just being done.

Ok, you have ADSL and your phone company is the provider.

Your phone line from the wall should go to your modem and your router should be connected to the modem. You can connect your computer(s) to the router either by Ethernet cable (the yellow cable) or wireless. Your laptop should have a built in wireless adapter as well as built in Ethernet. You may have to purchase a wireless adapter card for your desktop and install it if you wish it to be a wireless conncetion.. My desktop is old and did not come with Ethernet or wireless. I have added both cards to my desktop.

Once your router is connected via the modem, you can connect your desktop to the router with your yellow cable. I think you have already done this. Now you can can connect your laptop to the internet via wi-fi. Both computers can use the internet independently of each other. Your desktop can be turned off and you can still connect to the internet with your laptop or vice versa.

Once that is done. You can connect the two computers using a group. The purpose of the group is to share files, share a printer, etc. We use our home group mainly to share the printer which is connected to the desktop via USB. If your printer has wireless capability and you don't wish to share files between the two computers, and your desktop is wireless, you don't need a group.

I should have added you can connect your laptop to router using Ethernet. But wi-fi makes it portable. It might make it easier to to establish your internet connection using Ethernet. Once you have established the connection, you can then have your computer search for a wireless internet connection.

I have DSL... on my desktop

CARL how do I get the connection to my DSL on my laptop so I can get it on line?
independently of the desktop ?
right now I have no connection by way of the router even tho it appears it is connected.. something about an adapter..and the password isn't matching .

YES Carl that info is helpful.. but I cannot conect to I E at all now.that's what i've been trying to get across...after that Belking guy did the securing my router over the phone.

If your laptop is Windows 7, open the Connect to the internet wizard and follow the steps. Select wireless. Windows should see the wireless network and connect you. You will have to enter the password since you have a secure connection. Thereafter, Windows will remember this password.

If this does not work, please let me know or you can call your ADSL provider's help desk and that will talk you through it while you are at your laptop and on the phone.

Hi Everyone - sorry I'm late to the party

The way I would go about this is ....

(there are various points in this list that may need further discussion and actions, but will only expand on these if they are needed, rather than cloud the issues)

Use an Ethernet cable to connect the desktop directly to the DSL modem, and use the disk supplied by the ISP to connect to the Net, (I understand that this has already been done and works, so may be skipped)

Use an Ethernet cable to connect the laptop directly to the DSL modem, and use the disk supplied by the ISP to connect to the Net.

Once these connections are made and proved individually

Re-set the router to factory defaults. (normally press the reset switch for 30+ seconds)

Connect the DSL Modem to the Input port of the wireless router, (normally marked yellow), and the desktop to one of the other ports of the wireless router via ethernet, (normally marked green).

Start up the desktop and check the connection to the internet. This should give full transparent access, (if there are problems here then there are extra steps to perform, such as adding the ISP username and password to the router, though this is rare with modern DSL providers)

Repeat the procedure for the desktop using the laptop - ie. Connected by ethernet, and check the operation. (If there is a problem here then we will need to investigate further)

Disconnect the ethernet from the laptop and re check connectivity on wireless, The router should show up by it's default name and show no security in place. When connecting you will be warned about using an unsecured connection ok this for testing and check the internet access.

Once we get to this stage we can think about wireless security and the internal home networking which I will expand on once we have the basic set-up above.

here are...Screen shots of what was done to the router (by.. Belkins tech guy..) this must not be working now.. since I can't get connected..
I may have messed these settings up due to trying to get the laptop / router connected.. changing or using the password/ or those numbers on the bottom of the router..
I thought you needed to know what i've done to try to get the laptop connected.. when trying to get things working.

Hi LPT,

looking at the first screenshot there seems to be a discrepancy with the lan settings and the DNS Address setting - may just be the way I'm looking at it but can you access the Internet through the router from the desktop machine.

If you can, please unplug the connection from the desktop and re-connect to the laptop and see if you can then access the net.

Once we are sure that you can access the net wired from both systems we can set-up the wireless

Hi Basically the way I understand the current situation ...

You can connect to the internet from your XP desktop through the router but you cannot connect from the win7 laptop wirelessly.

What I was suggesting is that you unplug the cable going from the desktop to the router at the desktop end and connect this to the laptop. Switch on the laptop, with wireless switched off if possible ) and see if you have access to the net.

If this works then we know that the laptop is correctly set up and it is a wireless issue, if it is a wireless issue we can then proceed to diagnose the problem step by step

YES I could get that connected but I still see.."Cannot connect to this page.".
upon looking around it seems the problem exists ..
with NOT having my ISP connection on the router.. or the laptop...
I saw the below screen :
Local Area Connections - No internet connection
ipV6 - No internet connection
Media State - Enabled
Speed- 100.0 Mpbs
plus other screens when I look at my ISP connections... the box was empty.
I DID not type anything or change anything as it was.

Hello LTP! Your router has a utility so you can make changes to the settings. After you log-in, you start at the page you posted. This is the "Home Page". It is like a report, it tells you how things are set now. It does not allow for any changes. To make a change to a specific area or item, you must click on the word in the dark area to the left, for example the word "Security" as shown here. Then you can modify the settings there.

Robert I see the page you referred to.. however my page is slightly different.. this is a wizard page for the router..with those 4 screens I mentioned earlier..that you and I used earlier today to change the SSID.. to tomatokingdom/my wireless network on the Laptop.

Rober that's exactly the screen I see when I use the numbers .. same page you and I used earlier today to change the name on my Laptop newwork/or group page.to tomatokingdom.
Those groups and networks confuse the heck out of me..lol
