Solved need suggestions on new hardisk

Given the amount of time since checking this thread - what is the status of the format?

Hello so i transfer all my files into this new hardisk, run diagnostic SMART and short test (both passed) and run checkdisk and perfect finish.. Is this shows that this drive is running fine for now? Or should i run the extended test from WD a well?

I would not take the time to do the WD extended test personally.

If you are the type of person who worries a lot, then go ahead and run it if it will relieve your worries.

LoL so do u think that the previous tests incl chkdsk that i ran already sufficient? If thAts what u meant then i dont hv to do the extnded as well.. I never been worried like this bfore until the hardisk died on me.. Haha

99 people out of 100 do not do ANY of those tests you have done.

Most people just install the new drive, format it, and put their data on it.

The fact is the drive could die tomorrow whether you test it or not.

Do what makes you worry less.

Personally, if you have already run ckeckdisk, and Western Digital's SMART Test and short diagnostic passes,I would not worry about the extended test. Just enjoy the drive. It's a fact of life, hard disks do die. Sometimes for no apparent reason.

My personal preference would be to run the full test if you have the time. Having said this I have never had a full bad block scan fail on over 10 WD and Seagate drives.
I'm cautious and given the ridiculous prices of HDDs I'll continue to full test.

One thing you need to do is back up your data. Even if the HD fails in the future, you will have your data and can restore it in a short amount of time and you are up and running.

Just as an FYI for everyone. The OP has only a month warranty in the store the drive was bought in. The area in which the device was bought is not covered by a warranty beyond that. That being said, I would recommend running every test possible to make sure the drive is definitely good.

okay.. i see the points there that i should do the extended test and im doing it now... just one question, can i do other things while the tests is run? (e.g. multitasking)

As long as you do not access the drive being tested, that should be fine. If you want to be extra cautious, though, avoid using the system as much as possible during testing to prevent any read/writes to the drive due to Windows. Or set the security for the drive to not allow any Windows access by doing the same setup as you see in my image.
Start Menu -> Computer -> Right Click Drive -> Properties -> Security Tab -> Edit -> Add -> Type SYSTEM into the box -> Click on SYSTEM -> Deny column, Full control -> OK -> Check if yours looks like mine if you click on SYSTEM -> OK

If the drive is meant for SYSTEM access (you have a pagefile or hibernate information on it), then do not restrict SYSTEM access.

Okay.. Thank you.. As for the access.. Im not sure if my D drive is meant for the system.. But there is realplayer that access songs from it and if i download things.. It goes straight to D if that is what u meant.. Guess i just leave the computer untouched for the time being thanks for ur advices and suggestions it really helps!! :)

hi so i run the extended test and phew~~ it passed... so is that showing that its a good drive for now? i really hope it lasts for years to come ... :)

and there is one thing that concerns me... i have one samsung and one WD now... so as for the samsung... i used the seagate tools as that is what currently used for samsung drives... and this is what i found (attached pic)..

as you can see there are two devices identified with the same... i know its actually one but why it becomes like that? previously before i install WD drive its shown as one only :S

I had the same problem on my computer with the Seagate tools. I am not sure why this occurs. Anyone else able to shed some light on this?

I use the seagate tool and have never had that problem. Try using the western Digital diagnostic tool, windig. See if that helps.

i used the seagate to diagnose my samsung drive and windig for my WD drive... its kinda weird that i cannot run the short test to my samsung drive as before.. its just as if stuck in the middle.. so i just run chkdsk and it runs perfectly tho... i think i dont have to worry anymore ayt?since i ran it just fine last 3 days.. :D

You can download the Samsung diagmostic utility, ES Tool, if you need it. Crystal Disk Info is another good tool to have in your toolbox.

Running the manufacturers tests are desirable but you can always use Windows Chkdsk. It can be run outside of the command prompt environment if you like.
Computer>Right click partition>properties>Tools> Check now
Top box - a file system check
bottom box - full scan for bad sectors

The tool HDTune (free) will also allow you to do a quick scan that takes minutes and spans the full disk. Of course it is not a full scan.
