Solved Network not accessible, network address invalid

I have a total of 4 computers in my house:

Computer A: Desktop computer running windows vista, wired connection to router, HOME workgroup. Can access all computers on the network.

Computer B: Desktop computer running windows xp, wired connection to router, HOME workgroup. Can access all computers on the network.

Computer C: Laptop computer running windows 7, wireless connection to router, HOME workgroup. Can access all computers on the network.

Computer D: Laptop computer running windows 7, wireless connection to router, HOME workgroup. Can ONLY access computer B and C....Computer A shows up but I get an error message while trying to access it....\\pca-pc is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network address is invalid.

Other Thing I Tried

1. If I got to start run and type in 192.168.1.21 it then pop ups username and password box at which I am able to access the folder and files on computer A but then why doesn't it work the other way?

2. I did a complete system restore on computer D bringing it back to out-of-the-box state. It then worked correctly! Everything was fine. I completely updated the computer via windows update...still everything was fix and working correctly. Then I hadn't used the laptop for 3-4 days and the next time I turned it on...not working again. I changed nothing no new update just all of the sudden not working again.

3. Turned off router, reset router, refreshed router....nothing worked there.

I really hope to get this fixed, when I initially bought the laptop everything worked fine never had a problem, I did a system restore on computer A and D a short while ago and it seemed that's when I started having problems, I did another system restore on computer A and D thinking it would fix it but it didn't. First off.... I know you were trying to cover all bases, but waaay TMI (too much info) here. Both A & D are in the same IP address subnet (192.168.1.xxx) <-- good. You can ping, so you have network connectivity!

Since you said you recently restored a few of these PC's, did you go back and re-share the folder(s)?

Also, what usernames do you use on each PC?

Better to much info than not enough...

Yes I have re-shared all the folders and folders are accessible on the other 2 computers no problem.

As for the user accounts.

Computer A is Christina
Computer B is Nermal
Computer C is Steve
and Computer D is Summer

Everything worked fine before I was able to access Christina (computer A) from any computer using the username and password for Christina. Currently all computers except Computer D is able to access Christina by using Christina's username and password. I never had to have extra user accounts.

Furthermore I noticed on my windows 7 machines that in the credentials is has my old computer name (Summer-Lappy instead of the new Summer-HP) from Computer D that since it has been restored. I did however changed the computer name back to Summer-Lappy to see if it would fix the networking issue and it didn't. I also tried deleting that old credential and making a new one but it keeps restoring the old one on login and doesn't retain the new one.

Usually, you need the same user account on each PC... so if PC D (Summer) wants to access PC A, a user must be created on PC A named Summer. That's probably what got lost during the restore. Try creating that account on the other PC and report back!

Never had to do that before...Even after doing a second restore on Computer D it was working just fine. I did all the windows updates and it still was working without having to have a Summer account on Computer A. After not using Computer D for a couple days I tried to access the files and it wasn't working again.

Also if this is so true how come computers B and C can access computer A just fine and they don't have user accounts on computer A?

I never had to have a user account Summer on Computer A and I feel it's just a work around I want it to work properly like before. I don't want extra accounts on my computer.

Have you turned off any and all sw based firewalls on D? Many new AV apps now include FWs so check them too!

Double check all File Sharing Settings too.

I turned off windows firewall. I'm using AVG anti-virus (on all computers) which I also turned off.

I've checked over File Sharing Settings multiple times...everything is set right as it should be considering the other computers have no problems.

Try this.... whichever folder is shared on A....UNSHARE. Then reboot and reshare, then try to connect from D. If you get a un/pw prompt enter the name but make sure to tick Remember Credentials. That may fix it...

Also, what un/pw do you enter when you got this prompt?

Kaktussoft I'm unsure exactly what your asking. Are you suggesting start>run //ipaddress of computer A from computer D? I've already posted what this does on the initial post of my thread.

Tried leaving the homegroup and rejoining, tried leaving the homegroup and creating a new one. But still problem persist.


EDIT: Just now made a windows 7 credential on Computer D with Computer A's information (username/password) so far it's working! Will see how long this last though...Haven't restarted computers yet.

I rebooted once already and it was still working, had the laptop off for a couple days now and will turn it on and check again. Reason: Because that's what happened last time after a reformat. It worked just fine and then after a couple days of not using it all of the sudden it didn't work. Will post back (edit this post) in a few minutes if it worked...

EDIT: Yay it still works! Oldly it wasn't working until I created a credential for it...which I didn't have to do before. But at least now I don't feel like I have to do any extra steps or created un-needed user accounts in order to access my shared files!

I also hope that if anyone else is having this problem with networking and multiple computers that this will help them.

I did it all from the windows 7 machine. I basically had to leave the homegroup on computer D and leave the homegroup on computer C because they were both windows 7 PCs. I then recreated a new homegroup on computer D and added the Credentials for computer A then had computer C join the new homegroup. Computer B (Windows XP) was never a problem (I miss XP!!!)

NOW!!! Santa is dropping (or dropped) a brand new windows 7 computer down the chimney for my kids. It will be wired in and take the place of computer B....Wish me luck!
