New build not booting

Well, I took the mobo out, installed the heatsink, and am still having the same issue. The mobo has error LEDs on it, and just before it shuts off, LED 2 is lit. Looking in the manual indicates that this is a VGA error.

Take out your NVIDIA PCI card once, and try it with the onboard graphics chipset. You'll have to enable the onboard graphics in the BIOS if you disabled it when you installed your graphics card.

I did...booted it with no hardware hooked up except the HD. Still started up, and about 5 seconds later shut down, never even got to the BIOS. Just took out the CMOS battery and am going to put it back in in an hour.

Clearing the CMOS was my next suggestion, so we are on the same page. You only need to wait a couple minutes to clear the CMOS. Short the CMOS jumper with the battery still in [power cord removed from PSU]. This clears it just fine. Taking the battery out, and waiting isn't necassary.

Tried that...still nothing. Disconnected everything from the PSU except the mobo, still nothing. This is freaking frustrating.

Even the hard drive? I've had that happen to me plenty of times because of a bad hard drive connection. Just a blank screen when I power up, no BIOS.....nothing.

You've cleaned your memory modules up, and reseated them too?

If I was you I would read the motherboard manual slowly. You have to be missing something. Are you sure you cleared the CMOS? Sometimes motherboards ship with the CMOS shorted already, so you might have to change it to the other pin. Check the manual for the correct pins if you haven't already. I know this is extremely frustrating for you, but we'll figure it out. Take it slow, and remember to breath.

Oh, and tossing the PC out the window won't help. Trust me....LOL

Hmm...well, the CMOS jumper is in the correct position. Although it looks like I accidentally plugged the system fan into the NB fan slot. I don't think that that would keep the system from booting though.

Some motherboards won't fire up with the CPU fan not plugged into the correct header. Generally they put out more voltage for higher RPM's than the system header. If your CPU fan isn't getting the proper RPM's because of that, it won't fire up. It's a protection feature. Check that too.

I'm beginning to think you may have a CPU failure. God, let's hope not. Two DOA boards can happen though. It's a toss up at this point, but we'll keep trying.

Yeah, I'm starting to think CPU as well. I could always pull mine out of here and check it, as they are both LGA775 Chips.

Not a bad idea swapping CPU's for a troubleshoot. Let's hope your luck doesn't completely suck, and the board is bad, and fries your good CPU. It happens.

In fact, I have two motherboards and CPU's that are now only good for Frisbees because of that very thing.

Yeah, I think I'm going to hold off on that until tomorrow. I've got a ton of work to do, and have put it off to try and get this thing running. I'll post back tomorrow after I swap the CPUs.

By the way, did your other CPU fire up in your new board? Just curious if that's how you diagnosed it.

Yep, the other CPU fired up just fine. As for the eulogy...not really necessary. It was a Q6600, so it was probably about time to get an upgrade anyway.
