New Card, Old Monitor

I've just built my new gaming rig, and I was wondering if there was a way I could get an XFX AMD Radeon HD 6950 2GB to work on a VGA only monitor. For those of you who don't know, the Radeon HD 6950 supports Dual link DVI, HDMI and Display Port 1.2.

Yes, you need a DVI to VGA adapter.

From what I can see, I don't see why not as some of the other card manufacturers include a DVI-VGA adapter with their cards. Unless XFX only used DVI-D connectors on the cards, then all you need is a DVI-VGA adapter and you should be good to go.

Wouldn't this mean I'd have to have a DVI cable too? I heard that apparently converters aren't the best.

From what I can see, I don't see why not as some of the other card manufacturers include a DVI-VGA adapter with their cards. Unless XFX only used DVI-D connectors on the cards, then all you need is a DVI-VGA adapter and you should be good to go.

The card uses DVI-D, and XFX used to include adapters, but it seems with the 6xxx series they didn't include them.

as looking at the 5 different XFX models of the 6950, they all have DVI-I connectors on them.

If the old monitor has a VGA cable that is fixed, your best bet would be to use a VGA to DVI adapter. It doesn't get any simpler.

I thought having a port like that would require all pins. :huh:
So, I should buy a DVI to VGA converter/adapter, and buy a DVI cable?
*Edit* You are right, it does use DVI-I. I should just get a cable then.

If you have a VGA only monitor, then you want a DVI > VGA adapter on your card...


...and a VGA cable to your monitor.


On a side note if you just built a gaming rig w/ a 6950, you really should consider upgrading that monitor, the potential of that card via HDMI or DVI is so much greater than what you will be using w/ VGA.

Pretty much an either/or thing. If you already have the VGA cable just get the adapter.
