New Computer BSOD

New computer system, reformated yesterday to try to fix the problem. I was also having issues before I reformated. Computer BSOD's occasionally while gaming (Iracing, Dirt 2). Screen will also freeze for 5 seconds or so while playing Iracing while the sound continues on like normal. After the screen unfreezes, the fan on my video card spins up and AA/AF are no longer working. If I continue to play, the screen will freeze again and then when it unfreezes AA/AF will be back on. Specs are as follows:

I'm using the 10.3 ATI video drivers. I have run the Windows 7 memory diagnostics tool and it found no problems with the RAM.

I do not believe the problem is software related since I reformated and am still having the same issue. The dump files are attached.

Looks like hardware caused the problem. I suspect RAM, hard drive, or video card.

Make sure your temperatures are under control: SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

In addition, run a third-party memory test. Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using ImgBurn. Boot from the CD, and run at least 5 passes.

Download one of these hard drive testing programs and run a scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

I ran Memtest and it found errors in test 5. I looked around and saw that is normally a result of the RAM not being set correctly in the bios. So I looked up how my RAM is supposed to be set up. I set up my RAM correctly and Memtest now passes, even when I let it run overnight. I am still getting the same bluescreens and lockups while gaming as before. My temps are also ok. I believe my hard drive is okay because I used it with my old system with no problems. If I can't figure out anything else I will run one of the tools to check my hard drive. I see that there is a bios update for increased stability for my motherboard. I will give that a try when I get a chance. Is there a good way to test my video card to see if that is the problem?

I don't know of a good way to test the video card, other than pull it out and try a different card in your system.

As crashes occur when stressing computer(ie gaming) your PSU must be getting near to its power limits at max demands!

How many amps supplied on your +12v rails and how many do they say you need for that powerful ATi card?

Can you borrow and test with a friends 650-750w PSU?

We'll now show you some tests we have done on overall power consumption of the PC. Looking at it from a performance versus wattage point of view, the power consumption is pretty good for a product of this caliber, according to ATI the 5850 has a TDP of 151 Watts.

Our test system is a power hungry Core i7 965 / X58 based and overclocked to 3.75 GHz. Next to that we have energy saving functions disabled for this motherboard and processor (to ensure consistent benchmark results).

Our ASUS motherboard also allows adding power phases for stability, which we enabled as well. I'd say on average we are using roughly 50 to 100 Watts more than a standard PC due to these settings and then add the CPU overclock, water-cooling, additional cold cathode lights etc.

Keep that in mind. Our normal system power consumption is much higher than your average system.

* System in IDLE = 168 Watts
* System with GPU in FULL Stress = 348 Watts

The card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit at minimum if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 40 Amps available on the +12 volts rails.

From what I can see on the specs, I think I have 22 Amps on each rail so I should have enough according to the article.

Well I gave you a clue what to test for!

You're right on the edge re the amps/rails - so could be enough to tip PSU/card over at peak demand.

Got an older version ati card you can test with to see if you get these same lock_ups on your system during games?

I have a update on my situation. I am at school so I do not have access to another PSU or my older ATI card right now to test them. I recently decided to try and run Prime95. On Blend mode, all of my workers fail very quickly at which point I stop the test. I have tried many different RAM timings along with trying one stick of RAM at a time, along with putting the RAM in different slots with no difference in the blend testing.

I am still getting the BSOD's that I was getting earlier.

Using the event viewer, I am getting the following error when my screen freezes while playing Iracing:
Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
This error is fairly common from what I have seen. I have tried all of the "fixes" for the problem including disabling powerplay and underclocking my video card with no luck.

Also looking around in the eventviewer, I found the following error:

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Component: AMD Northbridge
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error
Processor ID: 0

The details view of this entry contains further information.

I have a feeling the only way to fix my issue will be to start RMAing things. Thanks for any suggestions!

I have the same problem. I have BSOD everytime, when I play newer games like COD 5-6 or Assassins Creed 2. But sometimes it happens too, when I'm just browsing. My computer is also new, a friend of mine built it for me a few months ago. The problem appears almost every day since then. I tried to uninstall the video driver completely, than install the latest driver - not works. Uninstall the latest driver and install an old one - not works. What comes with the vga card is not compatible with windows 7. Donno what to do, i just can't explain how annoying this problem is. Sorry for my english, i'm from Hungary. Please help! Thank you!

Loads of people reporting that error message points at faulty/CPU cache area. ie people who are unlocking 4th core on a 3X processor.

On the other hand the Cache clash could be due to the motherboard Bios have you updated it?

Make sure you re-run WIN 7 "WEI" after updating system stuff!

It sounds as if either the video card is faulty, or you need new drivers. Try uninstalling the drivers you have now, and install an older version. Keep playing around until you fix your problem, or run out of drivers to try.

Yep, realise that - just commenting that CPU-Cache problem crops up with that error code/report

Are there any CPU related lines in the bios you need to check?
