New computer - Mic doesn't work

So I got a new computer but when I plug my microphone in, it doesn't pick up any sound. The headphones work perfectly but the microphone doesn't. In the control panel (recording options) it has these options:

Front Mic
VIA High Definition Audio
Not plugged in

Microphone
VIA High Definition Audio
Currently unavailable

Line In
VIA High Definition Audio
Default Device

Stereo Mix
VIA High Definition Audio
Currently Unavailable

If this is a factory made computer I would go to the manufacturer's website and make sure there aren't driver updates for any of the audio components. Or perhaps even reinstalling the original ones may help.

And no its custom built.

I can't tell you that without knowing the model of the motherboard.

or you can just google it yourself, type in the mobo model and the word spec after it. You should be able to find a spec sheet for your motherboard fairly easily.
It would detail which of the audio chips you have.

Could you be a bit more specific as what you are trying to use the mic for, or what recording/communication app you are trying to use it with.
