New Context Menu - Remove & Restore Default Menu Items

How to Remove and Restore the Default "New" Context Menu Items in Windows 7 and Windows 8​


   Information
This will show you how to either remove or restore the default New context menu items in Windows 7 and Windows 8. These include the NEW - Folder, Shortcut, Bitmap image, Contact, Journal Document, Rich Text Document, Library, Text Document, Compressed (zipped) Folder, and Briefcase context menu items.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in the tutorial below.

   Note
You will only have Folder available in the New context menu in the root directory of the C: drive, C:\Windows folder, C:\Program Files folder, C:\Program Files (x86) folder, and C:\Users folder.


EXAMPLE: "New" Context Menu
NOTE: You can only see this New context menu when you right click on a empty space on the desktop or on a empty space in a Windows Explorer window.

NOTE: This is only available in the Home tab in the Windows 8 File Explorer Ribbon.

NOTE: In the C: drive, C:\Program Files, C:\Program Files (x86), and C:\Windows root directory folders and all of their subfolders, you will only have New - Folder available.

NOTE: This is for a WordPad .rtf document file. If you have Office Word installed, then it may be set to be the default program instead of WordPad to open RTF files with and would remove Rich Text Document if so, and you may have Microsoft Word Document instead.

9. To Remove or Restore "Shortcut"
A) Click/tap on the download button below to download the below.

10. To Remove or Restore "Text Document"
A) Click/tap on the download button below to download the below.

11. Save the .zip file to the desktop.

12. Open the downloaded .zip file and extract (drag and drop) the .reg file (remove or restore) that you want to use to your desktop.

13. Double click/tap on the extracted .reg file to merge it.

14. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve merging the .reg file.

15. You can now delete the downloaded ZIP and REG files if you like.

16. Sometimes it may take a moment before the missing New context menu item to reappear. If not, then restart the computer to apply.

I downloaded the "Text Document New Context Menu Item" saved it to the deaktop and Merge it and it add the value to the key but when I right click it still won't show in "New" I would like to have MSWord and NotePad there

Keyoung59, did you restart the comfuser? That's what I needed to do for this to take effect on a friends comfuser (but not mine).

Office may have taken over as the default program association. In addition, you might see if downloading and merging the txt option in the tutorial below may help. Did you remove the other default "New" context menu items as well?

I removed all the other items on the menu but I want Excel and Word there and I would like "Notepad". I looked up the default program for .txt and it's "Notepad.exe"
I have already downloaded the txt option on this thread and merged it and still doesn't show up I have restared the computer also. Still didn't show up.

I've just used the reg file to add Rich text to the context menu and NOTHIG happened.
Windows 7 Home Basic.
in fact, I had this working fine 'till CCleanner and a new free open source Office like software installed a couple of months ago. :cry:
So, I just don't know how to get it working again...

Is there another way to fix it? Please...?

Hello Ribeiro, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The Office app most likely removed it by taking over as the default program to open RTF files. Check in Default programs to make sure that WordPad has it's defaults set to be able to open RTF files.

Shawn, I just realised the shortcut link wasn't working on my right click menu, so I used your .reg fix and its wiped all of my other non windows entries - scan with MSE, 7zip, magiciso etc.

Anything I can do apart from system restore?

Strange, it shouldn't affect other context menu items like that. Did you only use the restore New -> Shortcut REG in step 9 of this tutorial?
