New laptop with Win 7 64 Few questions about partition of disk and...

Purchased a new Samsung quad core with Win 7 64 from Best for $399. Happy with the price.

Questions?

1. It says it has 4gb ram. But, on task manager, it shows 1.5gb used. Win 7 use that much?

2. I am not sure if I have 2 disk or one. I see a drive C, D, and a recovery. I was told it came with 500gb HD, but C and D have about 250gb each.

3. It says 3 2.0 usb ports. I see one my wireless mouse can fit in, the HDMI I reconize, but the other 2 I don't. usb 3.0 or?

The recovery partition is to recover your laptop in case you need to reinstall. The C and D partitions are not drives but should be partitions of the same drive. Look on the right side of the laptop toward the rear. You will find 2 USB ports there probably, and some manufacturers put one in the rear. I am sure your manual is installed on the laptop. It will explain where everything is and what everything does. Yes, Windows uses ram. It is very good at allocating it right. But, remember, every piece of hardware requires ram to run. So, it is not only windows that is using the ram.

To complement essenbe's good advice, you should, as a matter of urgency, create a Toshiba recovery disc.

How to use the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility

It's purpose is to allow you to recover your system to it's out-of-box factory state should the recovery partition fail to do so.

The only difference between the recovery partition and recovery disc is that the recovery partition restores your system a lot quicker than the recovery disc does.

The C drive is used for Windows, programs and your personal data. The D drive is purely used for storing data.

You could, if you wanted to, reduce the size of your C drive and increase the size of your D drive. If you consider you might want to do this, post back for further advice.

You guys are quick! Thanks. How do I view the manual? No ports in the rear. 1 usb and 1 hdmi on the left and and seriel port for monitor. The right has 2 ports. But, their not usb, but look like usb.

You'll need to be using Partition Wizard, as explained in this tutorial, which I recommend you read fully and understand before you dive in and start the procedure.

When you shrink C drive, Windows 7 disk management won't extend your D partition to the left , which is where the unallocated space will be, so that is the reason I suggest using the tutorial above.

First, backup up anything of importance and more importantly, create those Toshiba recovery discs so you have a way of recovering your system if things go wrong. Theog gave you a link earlier.

Next, download the ISO for the Partition Wizard boot CD then burn it to a blank CD. Imgbrn is a great tool for this job: The Official ImgBurn Website

Boot into your Partition Wizard disc and change your drive structure to how you want it, apply the changes, and then boot back into Windows.

If your Toshiba manual is in PDF format you'll need to download Adobe Reader first if you haven't already got it on your syste. It is free so it won't cost you anything.
