Hello I just finished installing a new MB and CPU and windows won't start. It seems to try and then fails. It will then restart and ask me if I would like to start Windows normally (doesn't work), or to run the start up repair (also does nothing). I bought the computer from iBuyPower about 3 years ago so I don't have a copy of the windows 7 disk. I have no idea what to do can anyone help me out please?

Hi,

Did you by any chance just install an existing HDD with your Windows 7
on, into the system with the New Mobo and CPU?

cheers

Dave

Yes it's the same HDD I was using. Everything is the same except for the MB and CPU. I also seem to have forgotten to make a disc image >_<

An existing installation of Windows won't work with a new motherboard, you'd need to reinstall Windows.

That's where the problem lies, you cannot simply install your OS into
a computer with a new Mobo and CPU, unless same make and model,
without making modifications, prior to change over, as it is different hardware etc.

As the old Mobo and CPU are faulty, that poses issues, I would have suggested following this tutorial
but you will be unable to follow Steps 1 to 5 :(

A new install may be the only way.

Also be aware that by changing your Motherboard your Windows licence may not be valid.

cheers

Dave

I think that would be down to your personal preference to be honest. Would you use the extra features of Professional? If it's for the same price as Home Premium would it matter if you didn't?

I wouldnt rush out and buy a new copy just yet you may get away with reinstalling with your old numbers (assuming you have a COA sticker on your machine)
If its a custom build as per your specs and you have purchased copy of 7 you should be able to reinstall without a problem, worst case you may have to robocall MS to activate
At the end of the day even if you do have problems it will still give you 30 days to activate which is plenty of time to go get a licence ;)

I didn't really know that's why I figured I'd ask. Would it matter swapping to a 32 bit from a 64?

No, if you have a valid licence it can be used to activate one machine at any one time regardless of wether it is 32 or 64, this is of course assuming you have at some time purchased a retail or oem copy of windows 7

Although this doesnt sound like it applies to you entirely as you are not reinstalling factory oem the process is the same and its an excellant tutorial that runs you through the entire process from downloading updated install media to final setup

Its definately worth a read
