Hi Guys

Have read through a lot of post, I have similar problem with several threads but I'm more confused now.
I have 3 External HD and one Semi-External (backup unit HP). None of them works through USB ports (none of my 4 ports).
Not even the four different Mem sticks I have tried works.

W7 says unknown devices.
1. I have tried all ports.
2. I have tried on Vista and XP on other machines (no problems).
3. I have had these units working on this hardware before (in vista).
4. I have the latest of everything as it seems.. (I think).
5. I have reinstalled with them plugged in and not like 4 times..
6. I have tried several updates and even tried with old USB drivers..
7. I found a writing on a 4 step check and did that to (power management, uninstall, checking power etc.. )

What the H...

My keyboard works (W-less).. My Camera works.. ? on all ports..

Any one has similar problems ?
This is driving me crazy ..

My Computer is:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00590499&lc=en&dlc=sv&cc=se&product=3176030&lang=sv#N815
HP Pavilion d4492.se
Motherboard:
Motherboard manufacturer's name: ASUS P5LP-LE
HP/Compaq name: Emery-UL8E

All the ports worked in vista and XP ?
so I do not understand .. I have thought of things like "broken" but it does not make sense when keyboard and camera works.. and the disks work on other HW and OS.. also the USB memory stick thing ?

Then it’s also strange about the semi-external disk (I do not know what its called but its a disk in a disk bay or something).. that one is internally connected directly to the main board with some strange cables..
That one is also "unknown" ..

I have followed several threads here, and I'm sorry if I have tried to be in several threads at the same time..

This seems to be a problem different to the others it seems.

ps.
Thanx SQUONKSC to straitening that out for me.. Sorry I’m getting desperate..

Best Regards,
Harry

So, thousands s3ven x64 users suffer from this damned usb issue. Now it's clear it's bug on OS's side, but so far no patches, fixes or updates. Damn it.

I have exactly same problem described here many times (all drivers are up-to-date, external hdd works on other OS etc but not on windows 7 x64)

Well .. lets hope there will come a patch for it or the full release will have it.. I'm so tired to mount the disks on another machine and access them through the network.. Dah..

Good advise Whest! Disconnect everything that is not essential for the install.. reinstall Windows .. re boot ... begin to re-connect your drives one at a time and allow Windows to detect them and download the appropriate drivers... this should solve your problem... hopefully .. :D

just thought i better add - firstly try restarting the pc after you power it down, and remove all the devices, and try connecting them one at a time if you havent already tried it.

Greetings for all of You guys.

I'm a newbie here, but as a Win7 user with the very same problem, i thought to share my results about this issue with the external HDD-s on Win Seven.

My case was the following:
i have been using the Seven for months with great satisfaction, but after an automatic update, the W7 did not recognise my external HDD (Samsung S1 120GB, 1.8" HDD via USB) at all. It did not appear in the "Computer", so i could not reach it, open it , format it or whatever. Disk management showed that "disk is unallocated", but i could not do anything with it.

To solve the problem, i "disabled the device" in the "devices and printers" (devices and printers -> right click the device -> properties -> hardware -> properties -> driver -> disable) and the i enabled it again. So the Win7 searched for the device drivers, installed it, therefore i could format it properly, and it works perfectly since then.

I hope i could help, maybe for a few W7 users...

Well for one, I do appreciate this, reason I will 100% guarantee i will test this, I have/had a new USB 2.0 Slim Seagate HDD, it comes with 2 usb port plus. tested and it is 100% DEAD, even the seagate diagnostics says, DEAD - code 10: DEAD on Arrival, now i did return and Yes, the retailer says tested and it is 100% working. so additional $5.00 cost and still does not yet work.
Another forum suggested: place the mobo driver cd in reader, and whenyou plug in the device, it should read the mobo driver and install.
I will test your way also.... and post back. the new/junk unit should be here Mon or Tue....

Thanks

Still trying .. grr

I have followed all the advises, but I'm sorry to say I still have the problems..

I tried (last week) to do the whole thing again, did it three different ways (reinstalling).

first with all the devices connected (3 HDD - USB 2.0 and one at a 1.1 port I think it is those drives are 2 Sata diskcabinets and 1 IDE cabinet, then also a USB bridge backup harddrive "HP mass storage bridge" with a HP HDD case of 300GB).
That did not work..

Then I installed with the bridge drive connected, and let windows when it was running try to find the others . . did not give any better result.

last i tried to install everything without the mass storage disk connected.. no difference.

I updated BIOS, well there where no older BIOS versions, i even reseted the BIOS and repatched it with an old one to later upgrade to lates one (where a bit lucky there ;)- ) but no changes happend with the USB devices..

Between all that I actually tried an XP session on the machine and the USB drives was found and was able to use the disk (through XP light boot disk do not recall what its called now but that workt), even with an normal USB memory stick..

I tried the suggested parts with printer and so on, nothing helped.
later I tried to repin the IDE disk to se if that gave any result, no not that either.. hm.

I tried to remove the mass storage part in devicemanager, and tried to use the vista one but that turned out to be harder than I thougt, could not completly identify the files and registry entries for that.. it gave me a lot of trouble so I needed to do the last reinstallation..

Well thats that ,.. I'm really hoping for the full release..
Else I do enjoy W7.. its good.

B

Touchy, this next part. I found on a couple of systems. only the BACK USB PORTS work on some items... even most manufactures recommend.
ONLY THE BACK PORTS. (reason: the back port are actually metal to metal ground to the mobo.
touchy but worth the try... small copper wire with two aligator clips.
attach one to the metal case which is usally attached via plastic. attache the other end of the wire to case frame. this gives a better complet ground to ground connection from the USB port to the chassis ground.
the outer shield should be wire that attaches to the clip.
try it. most cases i found the increase of ground allowed the MA to increase from 350-400 to 500ma. The 500 ma is required for many USB devices to work. crud but effective.

Uninstall from device manager solved my similar problem

I had a similar problem, but mainly with the oldest of my WD external HD. It would be recognized as a usb attachment, but driver installation was not fully completed. In the list of usb storage media attached (in device manager) it had a yellow triangle behind it. It could not be found in the disk drive section of device manager at this stage (because of the incomplete installation of the usb driver). I right clicked the entry in the usb list and chose 'properties' went to the driver tab and chose 'uninstall'. Following restart, the usb part was now completed without problems, but the disk was still only 'seen' in disk management, but could not be 'manipulated'. It was also now seen in the 'disk drive' part of device manager, from which I uninstalled it, leaving the usb part alone! After a new restart, the disk was correctly identified and the driver successfully installed, and 'voila' available!

Try this recipe for each of your usb component, or if you are brave, uninstall all the usb storage pieces first, then the corresponding disk drives..

Good luck!

This one, I will try, I have a suspicion that there may be problems with the power, except for the confusement of how that can be (regards to Windows 7 - XP) the drives and USB sticks work if I reinstall everything to XP .. hm..

But I will try this ;)-

Hm, I really think I have done everything in this area, removed everything, I had real problem getting anything working, but solved that .. Reinstallin, deleting, changing DLL files, updating, re installing bios .. douh.. well it does not give me any joy.. have done it so I can do in hundred different way in my sleep..

well, Im still confused by the "built" in cabinet (HP mass storage) due to that one is not in the USB ports, its directly on the Main board.. hm.

Anyhow, I'm almost certain it needs to be the (USB Mass storage) in Device manager that is the problem.. I have not yet Identified all the files or reg entries for that.. but it seems to be "mass storage" that cannot find the different storages.. (usb stick, Harddrives, built in.. ) thats the only "connection"..

To solve the problem on a Sony notebook running Windows 7, turn off computer, take the battery out. push in the start button for 30 seconds. Meanwhile, unplug your external usb drive from the power source and from the usb. Turn on the computer, plug the power cord back into your usb drive and plug the usb cable into it then plug the cable back into the computer. Windows 7 will detect it and install it. All is well with the world.

Unknown Device is not working properly.

I seem to have a problem that has plagued some other Win7 users and I was hoping someone could give me some feed back. I have not seen the exact problem but similar.
I recently put a USB 3.0 PCI card in this box and added a WD My Book 3.0 1TB drive. I did a BIOS revision as well. I wasn't having any real problems but I did notice it going to sleep periodically. The drive is working but it isn't being recognized. I put a desktop icon of it on the desktop and if you click it NOTHING, you can only access it by going into "My Computer". These messages were after I did a scan.

"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)".Problem with PnP devices Detected (little yellow triangles)
There are problems with some PnP devices. Windows will take additional steps to further troubleshoot these devices.
Detection details
Windows Version: 6.1
Architecture: amd64 . (This is an Intel i7 chip whats up with that?)

Anyway. It shows the device in the control panels as a "Unknown Device" This sound familiar to any of you? I thought the "Architecture: amd64" was really odd since this is an Intel based chip and MB. Here is my hardware settup.
