No audio device detected

Hi there,

I installed Windows 7 this morning, on my Windows XP partition, as I didn't want my old files and programs and backed everything I needed up.
The OS version is Home Premium, though I have the other versions should I need to use those instead to get my sound to work.

I googled my PC model and it came up with a picture of the exact one I have, and told me which cards I should have in there (everything's the same as I bought it, except the graphics card which is now an NVIDIA GeForce 7300).
So I found that I should have RealTek AC'97 sound card, and searched for the driver I might need. I found it, and downloaded the one for Windows Vista/Win 7.
Extracted, tried installing and that message (that I know others have had problems with) came up saying that the 'publisher could not be verified' and did I want to continue installation anyway? I had to click continue 32 times overall over the course of the installation and it finally apparently installed, then I restarted my computer.
Still no sound upon start up, and nothing reconciled by clicking the muted speaker button either.
So I searched around and found that perhaps installing the Vista/Win7 R250 x86 RealTek driver could work. So I tried that and restarted and when I go to my sound device manager it says that I have nothing connected whatsoever in terms of sound cards/devices and still nothing when I click the muted speaker icon. My speakers are always plugged in, and they need no driver. (Creative SBS 5.1)

I wondered if there's a problem based on my system spec, or something I am not doing right now that I have installed these drivers. Are there other drivers I need to install first? I have only installed my internet connection and a few programs that I need, so am I missing something?

My system spec is entered on my CP.

Hi Lizzi, welcome to the forum. When you installed the driver did you run as admin? Also what do see when you right click on the muted speaker icon and choose playback devices? We will do our best to get you some sound

I did run as admin yes, after finding out that it might work on the web. But it didn't seem to make a difference unfortunately.

Also, when I right click and go on playback devices, it says: No audio devices are installed.
Could my hardware not be new enough to deal with Windows 7?

Cool let's see what we can come up with, In the mean time someone may come along and have a fix. I will continue to look around on what I can find.

Can you get into the BIOS and see how your audio is set.

See if it offers you a choice.... Enabled, Disabled, AC97 or Azalia.

Since it worked before I'm pretty sure it's enabled but see if you have the "Azalia" audio option, if so, set it to that.

The Realtek drivers usually need to be installed twice, so re-install the the R250 drivers one more time.

SPDIF which is currently unavailable, and phone line which is currently unavailable, though I don't think that matters?
When I test my default speakers, there is still no sound, is there anything I should do now?

Ok, when it says unavailable, I'm pretty sure it means a device is not plugged in, that's ok.

No sound... ok, try this. Right click on the Microsoft Speaker Icon in the task bar.
Select Playback devices. It should be speakers with the green default check mark, correct?

First thing to check... play some audio in Windows Media Player, anything you might have, an mp3 file... do you see any green bars moving indicating the speaker is registering signal?

If it is make sure your speakers are plugged into the back of the PC using the light green speaker jack, although... you might try the black output jack as that has been known to work on -odd- occasions.

If no luck, make sure the speakers are back in the Lt.Green jack... then.

See how that goes.

Okay, problem solved! I plugged in some different speakers and just tried them in the other green socket instead, that never used to work on XP, and bingo!
My other Creative 5.1 Surround speakers used to work plugged in right at the bottom, in the orange, green and black sockets, and never worked with this one, but for some reason it's now working for these speakers in a different green socket further up the back of the PC!

Lizzi,

The 5.1. speakers my still work but you might have to tell Win-7 they are there as you do have an older AC-97 type audio system.

Do the right click thing on the MS speaker icon, select Speakers... there should be a Configure button on the left, and a Properties button on the right. The configure button may have the 5.1 setting.
