I just installed a Zotac Geforce 8400 video driver, however, when connecting via hdmi, I do not have any option to output via hdmi when going to manage audio devices.

I have the most recent version installed (196.21, shows as 8.17.11.9621 in the device manager); however, no sound option.

I had the outputs of speakers and spdif, but I went into the bios and disabled onboard audio to try and troubleshoot...I can re-enable if need be.

So, I'm at a loss on what to do...any ideas on how to get my sound from my Geforce 8400 card via hdmi?

I am going to add a SPDIF cable from my card to the motherboard to see if that works.

What do you see when you right click your volume icon and view playback devices?

Currently I see nothing as I have my onboard sound turned off from the bios. When I enable it, I see SPDIF out and Speakers out. SPDIF shows volume (green bars up and down), but no sound. I can not set the speakers as the default playback. No HDMI option.

That is exactly what is needed for Nvidia cards to pass audio over HDMI, unless it is one of the newer variations (and don't ask which, lost track with all their renaming) that has it built-in like the ATI HD series.

This should help,

Guide: 8800GT/9800GT/9800GTX Sound over HDMI (Now including Creative cards) - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

applies to any Nvidia card that is HDMI capable and has the SPDIF header on it.

I found the following about my motherboard:
Pin signal name function
1 spdif spdif dital output
2 +5VA 5V analog power
3 key no pin
4 gnd ground
my video card has 3 pins on it
I'm having a hard time tryign to find the correct cable...what should I be looking for exaclty? Google is not my friend on this one as I don't know how to search for what I need.

If you have 4 unused front panel wires like they show in that link I posted, you can always just make the cable yourself. You need 4 of them that when cut and then spliced together are long enough to reach from the header on the motherboard to the header on the video card. Won't necessarily be pretty, but it will get the job done.

As for connecting them, it should be the 1 and 4 pins on the motherboard and most likely the 1 and 3 pins on the video card (could also be 1-2). It may take a bit of trial and error to get the right combination, but it won't hurt anything if you get the wrong one.

I'm not sure if I have any open wires or not. I would probably just like to purchase a cable, or, multiple one pin cables. Any idea on what I need to google to find them?

Wouldn't happen to have one of these,

Audio-Y.jpg

connected to your cd/dvd drive would you? If so you could use it (may take a little judicious cutting to get the connectors to fit) as the thing isn't being used anyway.

Not sure, I can check when I get home. However, i would still like the option of just purchasing a cable opposed to hacking my current wiring system.

NVidia provides a separate HDMI driver which is not part of their video drivers. See if the Zotac website has it... if not I believe the Nvidia site does.

I ended up buying a cable that goes from the spdif in on the graphics card to the spdif out on the mobo. I was able to output my sound via spdif out then; however, there is still no HDMI option.

dzirkelb the reason that there isn't a HDMI option in the audio settings is that it sin't really HDMI audio. All it is is just plain old regular SPDIF passthrough that just happens to be passed over a HDMI cable.
