Last night I restarted my computer (hp dv9700 windows 7 pro x64) and when it came back online everything was normal except there were no user profiles for me to log into, the blue background with "Windows 7 Professional" at the bottom is there, but no user icons.

I got out the install disc and ran the start-up repair utility and it said the os booted successfully.

So, I opened up command and started looking around and both of my user profiles and all of my data is still there and able to be read.

After some research I learned about the BCD00000000 hive in the registry and went back into the repair disc and command and pulled up regedit and under local machine the BCD00000000 hive isn't there.

After an hour with Microsoft tech support they said to wipe it and start again, but i really would like to see if it can be fixed to avoid all the reinstall's of my software and such.

I have 2 hard drives so i put Ubuntu on the 2nd and my user profiles for windows are completely explorable.

Any Ideas??

Thank you
-Jason

Can you go back with system restore to a point about 7 days before the problem?

I did a system restore all the way back to the 2nd, which completed successfully, but the same issue when it restarts.

Booted from the disc, went to repair, and then to command. switched from X: to C: and ran sfc /scannow and this is what I got:

"There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

So I did, and same message. After some googling I found a page on microsoft that says something about not being able to use it from a mounted image. Am I going about it wrong?

Are you using anything like Daemon or Alchohol 120%; ie virtualization software?

If there is a way to do it without logging on, possibly; but from looking at the tutorial it doesn't seem that's possible. I have tried to go into command and turn on the hidden admin account but it won't show up either.

Hello,
I have the exact same problem.

After some maintenance on computer (updates & defrag with perfectdisk 10), i rebooted and then no logon screen:
black screen with non-moving mouse cursor, hard drive do something during 1 minute and then stops.
I can't do anything with keyboard or mouse, so i have to stop it manually holding 5 sec the power key.

I tried to reboot pressing the f8 key:
At first i did "last known good config" --> same problem
Tried safe mode --> same problem
I also tried boot repair with and without dvd (actually a usb key working perfectly) nothing happen. It reports boot ok.
ntbtlog doesn't say anything.
Restauration doesn't find restore point (i don't remember if i had some).

Everything seems ok with bootrec bootsect & bcdedit.
Disk has been chkdsk no problem with that, it is perfectly readable.
Same for registry, opened with regpe. Winlogon and session manager keys are good (i did compare them with another computer running same OS).
And each time i try to do a sfc /scannow i have the same error:
"There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again" whatever if i do this from repair mode, dvd repair mode, or even another computer (sfc /scannow /offbootdir=x:\ /offwindir=x:\windows).

I also removed pagefile and hiberfil, they are recreated each time i try to boot.

I am not using daemon tools, alchohol or WMware, or some tools like that.

So the problem happens just before winlogon load.

If anyone have an idea, suggestion or fix, it would be nice to help me with that!

I'm also so sorry for my bad english...

Many thanks to everyone,

Pedroo7
