I'm missing an installed recording device. I have three disabled/disconnected devices (two microphones and a line-in). What do I need to install to record streaming audio?

Thanks, but after I enable the microphone, the "set as default device" is grayed-out.

nothing specific. I thought it is a default driver.

I verified that the driver is current, but I don't know why I have two (and the in-line).

If uninstall them, how do I install a new one?

EDIT:

I have a vista machine that uses a mic as it's recording device and all is well with that machine.

Go to device manager in windows (start > right click my computer icon > properties > device manager), and then select the hardware items, click on properties and then update driver. Then you can install the drivers.

Shouldn't I be able to use my sound card as as an input device? If so, it's not available, disabled, or disconnected. Am I on the right track?

That's a great question! If it's not built into my mother board, I may not have one (if that's possible). In the old old old days I would have one and know what it was, but now????

What do you do given that I listen to streaming audio all the time, but don't have a handle on my sound card (if any)? My default payback device is a Microsoft high def audio device if that helps.

Thanks. I have a "High Definition Audio Device". How do I make it the default device for recording when it's not listed as available for recording, disconnected, or disabled?

That's a start, if you follow either step 5 or 6 in the tutorial to fill in your system specs, it will show in the bottom left of all your posts when clicked on.

Everything has been enabled (two microphone high def devices (not plugged in) and a line in high def devices (not plugged in).

The "set as default device" option is greyed-out on all three devices.

So, I can't complete step 6 of the last link.
