Ok, I think I have tried just about everything... Gateways website, Windows website, Realteks website, the E-recovery CD's (which didn't work!) uninstalling, re-installing, disabling, re-enabling... you name it! Here's the story:

back in Feb 2011, I had a virus, hired a guy to come fix my computer, which he did, he removed the virus, etc. the op sys that came preinstalled on my computer was Win 7 Home premium 64 bit, everything worked GREAT until the virus in Feb. He didn't have the right op sys to re-install, (and at the time, i didn't have the E-recovery CDs) So he installed Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit. since then, I have no sound, and no mic.

As I said, I've tried just about everything, that I've been recommended by each of the above mentioned websites. NOTHING has worked, and it's driving me nuts!

SO, if anyone has any new ideas, PLEASE let me know! I've even tried running msconfig and disabling the programs and services, thinking there might be a conflict, no luck so far.

OH! and one more thing, twice now in the last few weeks, I have heard A SOUND, but only for a min. The first time it played one sound, then quite working. The second time, just last weekend, I heard the same sound! So I opened up the personalization page to select the sound themes, and played a few test sounds, which worked!!! Then, unfortunately, my computer froze up (which happens more often lately, not sure why?) and by the time my computer rebooted, the sound no longer worked :(

Now I'm thinking it's just something that is causing a conflict, rather than the drivers, or broken hardware, since I was able to hear a few sounds!!! YAY!

So, how do I find out what is causing the conflict!?! AND, I would also like to restore the Win 7 home premium 64 bit, but apparently, the e-recovery disks don't detect the esata partition or something like that so I've been told!?!?

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! email me at [email protected] please! THANKS SOOO MUCH!

i am thinking a clean installation of windows might be the solution, or at the least, a repair install... You seem to have exhausted other resources from what you said in your first post

that would be fine, I have all my files (except a few recent ones) saved to an external harddrive... but the problem is, I don't know how to do that... and apparently the E-recovery discs won't work? i have asked someone else about it, and he has said he could take a look at it for me, but his dad recently died, so he's busy and I don't want to bother him.

but he did some research and said the CDs have some sort of problem and won't work?

Since you have a product key, I would search for an ISO of W7 install DVD and burn it to DVD

any reason why it would have played A SOUND and then immediately quit working again?

If it's not a driver problem or an OS problem, then it's a hardware problem. There could have been many reasons that you got a short bit of sound and then it quit again, most of which are un-fathomable to me

This seems obvious, but you never actually said so.....

Did you install the W7 32bit sound drivers for the NV59 from Gateway's website?

If yes, have you tried uninstalling the sound device from Device Manager, rebooting, then reinstalling the correct sound driver for your (32bit) OS?

If you post the full model number of the NV59 we can look at the drivers too.
