Solved No sound through HDMI

A few days ago, I plugged a HDMI cable into my new laptop and watched a few videos on my HDTV. No problems whatsoever. Since then though, every time I plug in the HDMI cable, the video comes through just fine, but there's no sound. I've found several threads with similar problems, both here and on other sites, but nothing I've found and tried has worked.

Some more details:

Laptop is a HP Pavilion DV6-3141ea
Graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (Most threads say it's something to do with the graphics but I've still not managed to fix it)

I've updated the drivers for both the graphics card and the sound card (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC). When I plug in the HDMI, nothing changes in my sound settings - the only choices I have are Speakers and Headphones, Independent Headphones, and Speakers (Bluetooth Hands-free Audio). There's no HDMI option or SP/DIF or anything appearing once I plug in the HDMI. I've checked for disconnected and disabled devices too, and it still doesn't show up.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I get the distinct feeling this is one of those things that's been staring me in the face the whole time ><'

If the HDMI is not listed in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound Panel playback section. RIGHT click in a blank area in that panel and select show disabled and disconnected devices. If it then displays the HDMI you can then select it as default playback device and you should get HDMI audio. But, if it still does not display that USUALLY indicates a problem with the Video drivers.

Like I said in my original post, I've already checked for disabled and disconnected devices, and updated all my drivers. Still lost :/

Where did you update the video? From HP or ATI (AMD)? I would update it from AMD, the entire package including the Catalyst Control Center.

This appears to be the latest driver direct from AMD ATI Catalyst

Yeah, I updated it from ATI, got the Catalyst software and such. Still nothing.

Did you try another HDMI Cable?
Are there settings in the Catalyst Control Panel?

There's nothing in the CCC (at least in the one for my ATI HD4850) about sound.

Go to the Device Manager and uninstall the sound and video then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the devices. If there is a corruption in the status between the devices and the Windows this usually fixes it.

In the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the device to highlight it then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers.

I solved it - and now I feel a right eedjit. Was looking in the Device Manager, about to follow your advice fireberd, when I noticed there were two identical items called High Definition Audio Controller - one of which was disabled. Enabled, fixed. Unbelievable. I think I missed it since I was only looking in the Sound, video and game controllers section, this was in System Devices. I definitely didn't disable it, which is confusing. No matter, it works now

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This completely solved my problem which I have been struggling with for several weeks. Went to Device Manager and realized I had two items called "High Definition Audio Controller" and one of them was disabled. Enabling it brought the Digital Audio (HDMI) option back to playback devices where it belongs.

Before I had exactly the same problem as RyuuzakiMasato7. Now I can play movies on TV from my laptop again (through HDMI), with the sound coming drom the TV instead of the laptop. I still have no idea how the High Definition Audio Controller became disabled in Device Manager, though.

My PC is acer aspire x3200
I discouvered this happened because I flashed a wrong BIOS which was posted on acer EU website.
reflashed the correct one and the problem was solved.

Ok, so I've tried to go through updating drivers. I've looked for the High Definition Audio Control in Device Manager; I've uninstalled software that my children apparently had installed that might have caused the original problem; I've slammed my head into the wall a few times (well maybe not but I've felt like it)
Any other suggestions for how to get my sound working over hdmi again? It was working fine up to about 3 weeks ago but cannot seem to find the change that was made to cause it to not function. I have picture but no sound.
Using HP Pavillion G6 with Windows 7; Intel i3; 4gb ram; 64 bit OS

Hi,

I had this problem on a Shuttle SN68PTG6. What is "funny" it worked the first time I did connections, but after some cabling changes on TV, no more sound.

I removed and installed again dri vers from Shuttle web site but no change ; I tested many configurations, reprogramming TV too, so I even had no more video when connecting the comp to VGA input of the TV!

Finally I succeed to have video on main HDMI (labelled ARC), HDMI audio by default in Sound playback panel, green scale animation when playing sound, but nothing on TV

Then I noticed that the Nvidia control panel was not working, so I looked for drivers on Nvidia Web site and installed the international one corresponding to my internal graphic card. So I got the Nvidia graphic control panel and had a look in multi display setting help and read this :

"When you connect a digital display to your computer while it is on - an action also known as hot-plugging - the dri ver detects the display and then configures the multi-display mode and display resolution based on the recent record of the displays connected".

This remind me ten years ago when we spent hours to connect a graphic card to have video on a normal TV. A lot of problems with TV detection, we needed to have adaptor or force TV detection.

So I did hot-unplug, disconnecting HDMI cable from my Philips flat TV, connect again to the TV, then the flat TV appeared in the Nvidia control panel and I was able to select it as main display, and... I got sound!

So I can say that it is not enough to update dri vers and select HDMI high audio as default device. There is still the problem where to send the video and audio. Since my TV has 3 HDMI inputs, the TV and the input we use, must be detected. This will be done with a hot plugging. I read posts where it is said that PC must be switched on first, then TV. It's not enough because it is not sure that the selected HDMI input is active when switching on and has dialog with the PC. So switch on TV, then select HDMI input on your TV, then hot-plug HDMI cable, then manage your graphic card control panel.

Hi, I just signed up to post details of how I managed to fix this.

It was pretty simple in the end, right click on the volume control icon and select 'Playback devices', set hdmi as default and you're good to go.

Laptop needs to be connected to the TV for the option to be available.

When HDMI cable won't transfer sound.

Make sure your graphics card is updated.

Mine is NVIDIA and I had ignored it's updates for awhile and so my HDMI cable wouldn't send sound to the TV it would keep playing from my laptop. I searched through these forums for an answer and saw a bit mentioning the graphics card controlling the HDMI stuff and that the sound driver (ex: Realtek) only controlled the sound through for the laptop. So update your graphics card.

I'm just posting this so future hunts for answers don't take as long as mine did.

How I solved it...

I've been through all those things that others have mentioned. I was particularly puzzled as I could play videos with both picture and sound through my external HDMI connected TV set (using VLC player), but music (also using VLC player) would only play through the PC's speaker. Whatever I did, I could not make "HDMI" an option for sound output.

The way I solved it was to download the following two High-Definition codecs from realtek:

• 64bits Vista, Windows7, Windows8, Windows8.1, Windows10 Driver only (R2.79)
  
• ATI HDMI Audio Device (R2.70)

The installation automatically de-installed whatever I had, and via two reboots installed the downloaded ones. I should probably add, that I had my TV connected via HDMI and turned on during the who install process.

This worked for me, too.

However, I was disappointed to see that Windows 7 doesn't seem to allow simultaneous audio output from both the audio (Realtek) and video (ATI) devices.
