I have currently installed the 6305 AC 97 driver. No sound at all even though the volume meter show levels going up and down as the song plays.
I have tried rolling back to the original XP driver with no success.

All volume levels are set to 100%
Speakers are set as default
Speakers are turned on and at reasonable volume level.
Basically anything I can check is set correctly.

I have read almost 100 threads about this topic with no luck anywhere.

I am currently using a Gigabyte 7N400 /pro/L with built in audio.

I am banging my head. :banghead:

I have over 30 years computer experience, so I am used to being able to follow directions and make things work. So this has me kind of choked. :mad2:

Has this ever worked since installing Win 7? The XP driver is not compatible due to a change in the way some audio functions are handled in Vista/Win 7/Win 8.

Not it has never worked in Win 7. I am currently trying driver version 6305 (again) which is the one that Win 7 installed to begin with. I have tried 6360 and currently have realtek software that says it is using 7206 - even though it still shows 6305 in device manager.

What gets me is I can see the volume going up & down on meters but not a peep heard from speakers (rear) or headphones (front)

Have you tried testing the speakers? In the Sound Playback section. Click on the "speaker" icon to highlight it and then click the configure button.

One thing to try. Go to the Device Manager, uninstall the sound AND the drivers. If there is more than one listed in the Device Manager (except an HDMI audio) uninstall them all. Then restart Windows and if the sound chip is Win 7 compatible, Windows will install the generic, basic function, High Definition Audio Driver (Codec). If that does get installed try the sound with that. If Windows does not install any sound driver, good chance it is not Windows 7 compatible (or fully compatible even with the RealTek AC97 driver). I used to work the Dell forums (for 10 years) and we saw a lot of audio problems when Vista came out and users upgrading. A lot of the XP sound hardware was not compatible and users had to install separate Vista compatible sound cards.

Deleting sound and drivers did not work. It merely installed the same 6305 AC 97 driver. I had to install a PCI Driver which windows update was not finding. So I tried it again and this time it worked. Although I went about getting the updates a different way.

Good that it got fixed. I don't understand the PCI driver though.

Not sure about that either, but it works, so I'll just be happy to leave things the way they are.
